Despite his low profile on social media lately, Dancehall artist Popcaan came out on top this week, proving once again that numbers don’t lie. His contribution to Megan Thee Stallion’s 2020 suite Good News paid off big time as the album was certified platinum on Wednesday for sales of more than one million copies in the United States by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Popcaan spits sultry lines on track 11 titled Intercourse, appearing among the enviable list of features including Beyoncè and Big Sean. Last year also brought link-ups with the likes of Maroon 5 and Dave East, and Poppy isn’t the first dancehall act to go platinum on a feature either.

In February, Konshens celebrated with a drink when Nipsey Hussle’s album Victory Lap, which features their collaboration Succa Proof (featured in the Without Remorse trailer), was certified platinum. Though the Silence deejay still hasn’t responded to the recent rap feat, an RIAA platinum plaque would add to his growing number of awards which include Gold for Jamie xx’s I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times) with Young Thug, 2 MOBOs and 3 IRAWMA trophies, among them the newly introduced U-Roy Award for Best Male Deejay.

While we wait to see whether Popcaan gets a new token for his wall, his close friend and OVO boss Drake showed off some of his dynamic wall art on his IG Story yesterday, featuring a painting of the 876 GUD himself.

Drake showed his 86M followers a few pieces from his diverse personal art collection, some of which were also seen in his Toosie Slide music video.

Fans quickly pointed out Popcaan’s likeness among the abstract pieces, rocking one of his famous crazy hairstyles before his buzzing trim in 2020.  The artist, Zallah Yasamin-Akbari (@zallahs.canvas), had sold the piece to Drake sometime in May 2021 for $400.   The canvas print is also listed for $25 on her website.

The painting is a casual testament to their unshakeable friendship, especially at a time where rumors of internal conflicts in camps are rampant.

Meanwhile, Popcaan came out of hiatus on Thursday, tweeting a quick but clear response to rumors he’d been punched in the face by Unruly Cuz. By Friday his Twitter page was silent again, but it’s clear his fans haven’t forgotten the Only Man She Want deejay on his months-long internet break. Though he hasn’t dropped hits in a minute, Popcaan closed out the week in the top ten most viewed songs and artists on YouTube Jamaica.
