While largely known for his musical successes in the Dancehall industry, the very entertaining and Unruly Popcaan is arguably the most adventurous where hair is concerned, perhaps even topping the ladies.

In light of his new low-faded trim , it’s safe to say he has ended a chapter of crazy and over-the-top coiffures. Which makes this the most opportune time to look back on some of Poppy’s older and now sadly gone hairstyles.

Nobody rocked wild like the Ravin artiste, and we’ve got the photos to prove it. These are the 10 most unruly hairstyles from Andrae ‘Popcaan’ Sutherland through the years.

1. The Soursop

Dubbed the Soursop by the Unruly Boss himself after his role in “The Intent 2” movie, this Congolese Hairstyle is a Central African Republic inspired hairdo that often uses tightly wrapped cords or hidden wire insertions to create multiple spiked plaits.  In Popcaan’s case here, his hair was tightly plaited in an outward direction and held in place with mini rubber bands to create his crazy ‘torpedo’ spikes.

In The Intent 2: The Come Up, a british crime triller released in 2018, Popcaan wears the hairstyle while playing a don who runs the underworld in Kingston, Jamaica.

2. The Ganja Leaf

Looking like a lush Ganja Leaf right here, Popcaan’s effortless comb-out style is flying high and is as daring as it gets. The deejay looks out and about in this photo, which means he probably secured his flowing mane with some holding spray to keep this wild style in place.

3. The Fusion

This stylish Soursop Fusion of spiking Congolese plaits, two relaxed buns and what again looks like a Ganja leaf braid pattern in the back is simply fascinating.

The complete hairstyle is full of surprises; the striking front view draws you in for a closer glance then out of nowhere the intricate styles in the back (slide right) just jumps right out at you.

4. Forward Track Corn Rows

There is nothing ordinary about these Forward Track Corn Rows but for Popcaan they clearly didn’t have enough flare on their own, so he just had to make the ends pop… several more times actually. These small double-banded ponytails encircle the entire circumference of his head for an interesting and bold style.

Another version of this Forward Track Corn Rows style has free flowing fluffed ponytails at the end instead. He simply removed the rubber bands at the length of each section to completely transform this look.

He also rocked a version of Forward Track at Unruly Fest last year.

5. The Poppy

It’s probably pretty safe the call this one the Poppy for obvious reasons. With multiple micro braids forming several mini ponytails all over his head, this look comes complete as rubber bands snap small ball-shaped hair along the length of each section for a very ‘poppy’ appeal.

In 2012, he rocked the look for an interview with Crack Magazine.

There’s also been variations of the Poppy.

6. The Relaxed Twist

This Relaxed Twist hairdo definitely has character as each twist has an agenda of its own. Half twisted or twisted to the ends, downward facing, spiked to the side, wiggly and straight… simply epic!

7. The Snail’s Eye

This is formally known as the Snail’s Eye hairstyle, (Nwoba Enyiwa) said to originate from Ghana. It looks like Popcaan is a fan of these African styles and this look in particular. He’s often seen rocking out this ‘do, whether in his music videos or Insta photos; nonetheless it still sets him apart from the average looking guy.

8. Festive Beads

While we’ve seen this look before or similar, we haven’t quite seen this festive addition of Rasta colored beads dangling at the ends for the Shaggy and Friends concert in 2016. There is simply no limit to Poppy and his hairdos, he’s always trying to ‘up’ his game.

9. Gravity Defying Fat Plaits

Another popular look for Popcaan, these Gravity Defying Fat Plaits are as conspicuous as can be. Why do regular downward braids when you can launch missiles like these?

He appeared on the cover of The Fader‘s annual Summer Music issue in 2014 rocking a version of this hairstyle.

10. Afro Puff

The classic Afro Puff, while this appears to be a selfie taken at home, perhaps the prepped hair before the storm, it’s hard to tell knowing Poppy. We have seen some wild styles from this dancehall deejay so this could simply be another. It’s also a great way to end our list of Popcaan’s many crazy and unruly hairdos through the years.

The deejay rocked rough with double afro puffs in this 2008 photo with then mentor Vybz Kartel.

This list wouldn’t be complete without the mention of Popcaan’s iconic album covers. Where We Come From, Forever and Vanquish displayed some of his wildest styles, yet true to form highlighted the signature mixings of cornrows and popping spiky ponytails.

In debuting his new low cut look yesterday, Popcaan also revealed that a new mixtape will be released later this month.
