DancehallMag is the leading independent publication covering Dancehall and Reggae music, the artists, and culture since 2019.

Gramps Morgan didn’t wait on a big press push to share his latest visual. The Morgan Heritage singer posted a YouTube link on Twitter with a simple line, “Gramps Morgan – A Woman Like You (Official Music Video),” and let the clip carry the rest.

That quiet rollout says something about how veteran reggae acts reach their audiences now. Posting straight from his own account to YouTube puts the song directly in front of the fans who’ve followed him for decades, with no middleman.

The title points toward a love song. That’s a different register from the roots-and-culture material that built the Morgan family’s reputation, though Gramps has always been comfortable moving between both worlds.

For many listeners, Gramps will always be tied to Morgan Heritage, the group formed by the children of the late Denroy Morgan. Songs like “Don’t Haffi Dread” made them one of the most recognizable family acts in modern reggae. The band’s run eventually earned them a Grammy for Best Reggae Album with “Strictly Roots.

Gramps has kept a solo career running alongside the group. His 2010 album “Two Sides of My Heart” showed he could hold his own outside the family lineup, leaning on the warm, soulful vocal style that fans already knew from Morgan Heritage records.

There’s also a heavier backdrop to any new music from the Morgan camp right now. The family lost its patriarch, Denroy Morgan, in 2023, and Peetah Morgan, Gramps’ brother and a lead voice in Morgan Heritage, died in 2024.

Gramps’ post makes no mention of that history, and there’s no indication the new video is connected to it. Still, longtime fans tend to hear any release from a Morgan family member with those losses in mind, which gives even a straightforward love song extra weight.

Two readings of this drop are possible, and both hold up. One sees it as an artist doing what he’s always done, putting out music and keeping his solo catalog moving.

The other sees a family legacy carrying on in a new form, with each member’s individual work keeping the Morgan name active in reggae.

What the post doesn’t say is just as telling. Gramps hasn’t shared whether “A Woman Like You” is part of a larger project, who directed the video, or whether more releases are lined up behind it.

For now, the video is up on YouTube, and early fan response is still taking shape. Whether this turns out to be a one-off single or the opening move toward something bigger is the question his followers will be watching for next.
