The Marley family tree is one of the most sprawling and musically consequential in the history of popular music. Robert Nesta Marley was born on February 6, 1945, in Nine Mile, Saint Ann, Jamaica, and died on May 11, 1981, in Miami, Florida, aged 36.
In the 36 years he lived, he produced a body of work that reshaped global culture and a family whose reach now extends well into a third generation.
Between eight women, Rita Marley, Cheryl Murray, Janet Bowen, Lucy Pounder, Janet Hunt, Anita Belnais, Cindy Breakspeare, and Pat Williams, the Jamaican icon fathered 13 children, though the exact official count is the subject of some dispute.
His website recognizes 11 children born between the years of 1964 and 1978. Understanding who those children are, who raised them, and what they have built is the essential guide to the Marley family tree.
Bob Marley: The Root of the Tree
Considered one of the pioneers of reggae, Marley fused elements of reggae, ska, and rocksteady, and was renowned for his distinctive vocal and songwriting style.
He died from an acral lentiginous melanoma, a form of skin cancer. He had been diagnosed in 1977, and it had spread from under a nail of his toe.
Mere days after Bob Marley played Madison Square Garden in September 1980, the singer collapsed while jogging in Central Park.
The subsequent diagnosis was bleak: aggressive melanoma on his toe had spread to his brain, liver, and lungs.
Though his estate was worth an estimated $30 million at the time he passed away, Bob Marley did not create a will, believing that such a document showed an inappropriate concern with earthly matters.
Under Jamaican intestate law, his wife Rita would receive 10 percent of his assets plus a life estate of 45 percent, and his 11 children would be entitled to equal shares in the remaining 45 percent of the estate.
However, the absence of a will meant that the family had no rights to Marley’s name, likeness, and image, which was the largest asset of the estate.
His father, the legendary Bob Marley, received a Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. Marley was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.
Exodus was named Album of the Century by Time Magazine, its track “One Love” designated Song of the Millennium by the BBC.
Rita Marley: The Matriarch
Born Alfarita Constancia Anderson, Rita Marley was the only woman Bob Marley was ever married to. Rita and Bob Marley married in Kingston, Jamaica, on February 10, 1966.
The two met when Rita formed a singing trio called the Soulettes and had worked with Bob as a vocal and recording coach.
Along with Marcia Griffiths and Judy Mowatt, Rita became a member of the reggae vocal group the I Threes, the backing vocalists for Bob Marley and the Wailers.
When a gunman opened fire at their home on Hope Road in Kingston on December 3, 1976, one bullet nicked Bob’s elbow and another grazed Rita’s head.
Sporting bandages and an Ethiopian head scarf, she joined Bob onstage two nights later when he and the Wailers headlined the free public concert Smile Jamaica.
Rita Marley currently resides in Ghana. She relocated in 2004 after living in Jamaica for a long time. In 2014 she founded The Rita Marley Foundation to “alleviate poverty and champion female empowerment in Jamaica and Ghana.
The Children: A Timeline of the Marley Family Tree
The following section traces each of Bob Marley’s children in chronological order, from the first born in 1963 to the last born months before his death.
1963: Imani Carole Marley (Mother: Cheryl Murray)
Cheryl Murray and Bob Marley dated from 1961 to 1963. Imani Carole Marley was born on May 22, 1963, to Bob Marley and her mother Cheryl Murray when Bob was only 18 years old.
Little is known about Imani or her mother. Imani lives a low-key life in Atlanta and is not listed as one of the Marley children on his official website.
Her status within the family remains an open question: very little is known about Imani or her mother and it is unclear what Cheryl Murray’s connection to Jamaica or to Bob would have been during this time.
1964: Sharon Marley (Mother: Rita Marley, adopted by Bob)
Sharon was born two years before Rita married Bob to an unnamed man, but Bob adopted her as his own and she is officially recognized as one of his children.
Sharon first gained recognition in the family group Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers. After the group disbanded in 2002, she went on music hiatus and became head of A&R for the record label Ghetto Youths United.
Sharon Marley is recognized as one of the first female Jamaicans to achieve a platinum record in the United States. She returned to her music career with the release of her debut single “Just One More Morning” in 2021, and in March 2026, she released her first solo album, Firebird, on her record label Gong Gyal Entertainment.
1967: Cedella Marley (Mother: Rita Marley)
Bob had Cedella Marley with his widow, Rita Marley, in 1967. Cedella Marley has three Grammys with her siblings. She helped produce the new “Bob Marley: One Love” biopic about her dad.
Beyond her work in music production, Cedella’s son is Skip Marley, whose father is David Minto, making her the mother of one of the most prominent voices in the Marley third generation.
1968: Ziggy Marley (Mother: Rita Marley)
David Nesta “Ziggy” Marley, born October 17, 1968, is a Jamaican reggae musician, songwriter, producer, author, and philanthropist.
The eldest son of Bob Marley and Rita Marley, he led the family band Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers until 2002, releasing eight studio albums, before launching a solo career on his label Tuff Gong Worldwide. He has become a prominent voice in reggae music and is a solo artist with eight Grammy Awards and one Daytime Emmy Award to his credit.
In 2024 he served as a producer of the biographical film Bob Marley: One Love; the companion compilation Bob Marley: One Love, Music Inspired By The Film (Deluxe) won the 2025 Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album.
Marley is the founder of the U.R.G.E. Foundation, which is dedicated to making enduring contributions to the lives of children in Jamaica, Africa, and throughout the world.
1972: Stephen Marley (Mother: Rita Marley) and Robbie Marley (Mother: Pat Williams)
Bob and Rita’s final child together was born April 20, 1972. Stephen Marley is an eight-time Grammy Award winner: three times as a solo artist, twice as a producer of his younger paternal half-brother Damian Marley’s Halfway Tree and Welcome to Jamrock albums, and a further three times as a member of Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers.
In addition to the three Grammys he shared with his siblings, he has three as a solo artist and two as a producer on younger brother Damian Marley’s albums.
Notably, Stephen’s eldest child, singer Joseph “Jo Mersa” Marley, died on December 27, 2022, at the age of 31 after suffering an acute asthma attack.
Also born in 1972, Bob had Robbie Marley with Pat Williams. Robbie has largely remained outside public life and is one of the less documented members of the Marley family tree.
1973: Karen Marley (Mother: Janet Bowen)
The reggae legend had Karen Marley with Janet Bowen the next year. She has become a fashion designer after leading much of her life outside the public eye. She has an eco-friendly line with her brand, By Karen Marley.
1974: Stephanie Marley (Mother: Rita Marley, adopted by Bob)
Bob Marley adopted Stephanie Marley, born in 1974. Rita had daughter Stephanie Marley outside the marriage, and Bob adopted her.
Stephanie directs the Marley Resort and Spa, a former family home turned into a luxury destination in the Bahamas.
1975: Julian Marley (Mother: Lucy Pounder)
Julian is the son of Marley and Lucy Pounder. Born in 1975, Julian is a reggae musician, songwriter, and producer. His 2024 Grammy win for Best Reggae Album was a milestone for the family: with Julian Marley’s 2024 win, the Marley family’s Grammy count climbed to a total of 28 individual wins.
In 1976, Ky-Mani Marley was born to the singer and Anita Belnavis, a table tennis champion in Jamaica. Ky-Mani is the son of Marley and Anita Belnavis. He and his mother moved to Miami, Florida, after Marley died.
Like many of his siblings, he was drawn to music and released his first album in 1996. Ky-Mani Marley holds one Grammy nomination without a win.
1978: Damian Marley (Mother: Cindy Breakspeare)
In 1978, Damian Marley was born to Cindy Breakspeare, a jazz musician and model who was crowned Miss World in 1976. Known as “Jr. Gong,” Damian is arguably the most decorated of Bob’s children in terms of solo Grammy recognition.
In 2006, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley became the first, and to date only, Jamaican artist to win the Grammy for Best Urban/Alternative Performance for the title track to his gold-certified album, Welcome to Jamrock. Five golden gramophones grace Damian’s shelf, including three recognizing his solo albums in the Best Reggae Album category.
Damian’s production credits also include Kabaka Pyramid’s 2023 Grammy winner The Kalling, and Damian’s own Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise, which celebrates its 10th anniversary.
Rohan Marley (Mother: Janet Hunt)
Rohan is the son of Janet Hunt, who was 16 at the time of the child’s birth. Born in 1972, Rohan is a businessman and former college football player.
He and Lauryn Hill were in a long-term relationship for several years and have five children together. He is an entrepreneur, founding Marley Coffee in 2009 and pitching in with his family’s charitable organization 1Love.
Makeda Marley (Mother: Yvette Crichton)
Just two months before the singer’s death, in March 1981, Yvette Crichton gave birth to a daughter named Makeda Jashnesta Marley. Eleven years later, Rita acknowledged that Makeda was Bob’s daughter and she was finally listed as a beneficiary of Bob Marley’s estate.
Makeda’s inclusion in the estate came only after a prolonged family dispute, illustrating how the lack of a will complicated the inheritance for the entire Marley family tree.

With the most individual wins among his siblings, Ziggy Marley boasts seven Grammy Awards for Best Reggae Album, four as a solo artist and three alongside The Melody Makers, which included Sharon, Cedella, and Stephen. He also has one win for Best Musical Album For Children, bringing his total to eight.
Stephen is also an eight-time Grammy Award winner who has earned his golden gramophones across solo projects, production, and his work with Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers. Siblings Cedella, Sharon, Stephen, and Damian are also Grammy winners.
The 2024 Legacy Tour: Five Brothers on One Stage
The Marley Brothers’ Legacy Tour, which traveled throughout North America in September and October 2024, presented a compelling reminder of the timelessness of Bob Marley’s music while showcasing the diverse talents of five of Marley’s sons.
Ziggy, Stephen, Julian, Ky-Mani, and Damian Marley performed their father’s roots rock classics, ballads, protest anthems, and Rastafari hymns alongside a few of their original songs.
The tour represented the siblings’ first collective tour in two decades. The Wilmington, North Carolina, date was filmed for a PBS special, ensuring the moment will reach future generations who never saw the patriarch perform.
The Third Generation: The Marley Family Tree Keeps Growing
The grandchildren of Bob Marley now represent a third musical generation. Bob Marley’s recognized grandchildren include Skip Marley, YG Marley, Nico Marley, Jo Mersa Marley, Bambaata Marley, and Selah Marley, among others.
Skip Marley’s parents are Cedella Marley and David Minto. Skip began his music career in 2015, signed with Island Records in 2017, and has collaborated with artists like Katy Perry, winning a Grammy in 2025 for Best Reggae Album.
YG Marley, born Joshua Omaru Marley on December 5, 2001, is an American singer and rapper and the son of singer Lauryn Hill and former football player Rohan Marley, and the grandson of reggae pioneer Bob Marley.
Bob Marley’s album Kaya includes “Crisis,” sampled by Bob’s grandson YG Marley for his 2024 single “Praise Jah In The Moonlight.”
Jo Mersa Marley, a grandson via Stephen Marley, released the Eternal EP before his sudden death in December 2022 at age 31. Selah Marley, a granddaughter via Rohan Marley and Lauryn Hill, is a model and recording artist blending R&B with conscious music. Mystic Marley, a granddaughter via Stephen Marley, is an emerging reggae artist.
The lineup of Damian Marley’s Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise includes Bob’s grandchildren Mystic, Skip, YG and Yohan Marley, billed as Marley 3rd Generation.
The Marley Legacy: More Than Music
The Marley family tree is not only a musical dynasty but a philanthropic and entrepreneurial one. Rohan Marley founded Marley Coffee in 2009.

Marley was a force to be reckoned with: a legendary rock star who sold over 75 million records, he was also a political activist and visionary. His estate is estimated to bring in more than $25 million per year, making him one of those celebrities who made a fortune after dying.
The question of how many children Bob Marley actually fathered remains open. The exact number of women who bore Bob Marley’s children remains somewhat elusive.
What is not in dispute is that the Marley family tree, rooted in Nine Mile, Jamaica, has grown into one of the most creatively fertile and globally recognized dynasties in the history of popular music.
