Dancehall artiste Popcaan, today embarked on an emotional tour of the former slave holding Cape Coast Castle in Ghana’s central region. The infamous castle is one of three such slave castles in Ghana and it played a pivotal role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade which existed between the 16th and 19th centuries.

The Vanquish deejay and his Unruly entourage arrived in the West African country to a glorious welcome on New Year’s Eve for the ‘Year of Return’, with Popcaan kissing the ground at the airport to show his love for the Motherland. Days later, Popcaan took it up a notch when he bought a new house in the country.

At the castle today and sporting a matching African heritage shirt and hat, Popcaan got a first person look at the slave trade site where countless Africans were tortured and enslaved. The artiste definitely wanted to capture the experience and took to his Instagram page to share videos and photos of a walk-through tour of the castle with his almost 2 million followers.

Popcaan expressed sadness at the sight of the male and female dungeons and passageways, as the tour guide explained how they were used hold and ferry the captured slaves to ships waiting off the coast some 400 years ago.

In one clip posted to his Instagram Story, Popcaan soberly said “RIP to mi ancestor dem souls yuh know,” as he made his way between exhibits.
