Popcaan Receives Superstar Treatment As He Touches Down In Ghana
Dancehall recording artiste Popcaan received the certified superstar treatment on New Year’s Eve, when the artist landed in Ghana to ring in the new year.
The unruly boss and his entourage were swarmed by hundreds of fans as they made his way through the airport. Scores of fans and even airport workers shouted “unruly popcaan” as they bombarded his team, trying to snap pictures and videos of the dancehall star.
At one point, Popcaan proceeded to show his respect for Ghana, and the entire motherland of Africa, by kissing the airport’s ground. The act delighted Ghanaians as it is seen as a symbol of his love and respect to their homeland.
The tradition of kissing the ground after disembarking a plane is common with Popes and other Catholic leaders. It is done often to express love and respect for the country and its people.
As he exited the airport, the deejay had a line of luxury cars and motorcycles to escort him and his entourage to the private residence in Accra.
Its been five years since Popcaan, whose real name is Andre Sutherland, last visited Ghana. The deejay’s last visit was on March 8, 2014. where he was at the Accra Sports Stadium for the post-independence bash.
After the deejay posted a video of his airport experience in Ghana on Instagram, locals inquired whether the artist was there to perform, but sources in Ghana later revealed that the artist is merely there on vacation.
In recent years, Ghana has become a popular vacation spot for international celebrities. Scores of celebrities like Jidenna, Ludacris, Naomi Campbell, Anthony Anderson, Tarrus Riley and more were spotted in Ghana in December. While many went to enjoy the Afrochella music festival at the end of the month, others stayed to ring in the new year in the motherland.
Jamaican fans commented on the timing on Popcaan’s visit, which they say has overshadowed Alkaline’s recent performance at Afrochella in Ghana a few days ago. One comment read “see how it look when star touch down! Lol where was this vybe when Alkaline did ova deh last week?!” while another person wrote, “and come a hype u alka performance wid the crowd dead as fuk a look pan alka… see real celebrity ya”.
Popcaan rang in the new year at the private mansion, with a host of his Jamaican and Ghanaian friends.
