The stage crews who spent days building one of Central Park’s biggest setups are now tearing it all back down. Global Citizen Festival has been canceled ahead of Saturday’s planned event on the Great Lawn, with an incoming nor’easter forcing organizers to pull the plug before thousands of attendees could show up.
AllHipHop exclusively learned that the festival stage was only built to handle winds of around 35 mph or less, and forecasts tied to the approaching storm suggested conditions could push well past that limit.
The New York City Parks Department had been given final say over safety, and the math simply didn’t work out in the festival’s favor.
The cancellation stings especially hard given what was on the bill. Ms. Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean were set to headline with a full performance celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Fugees’ “The Score,” one of the most celebrated rap albums ever made. That reunion alone had made this year’s lineup feel different from previous editions.
Beyond the Fugees, the rest of the lineup was stacked. Lenny Kravitz, John Legend, Alicia Keys and Friends, Lainey Wilson, Shaboozey, Victoria Monet, TOMORROW X TOGETHER, YEONJUN, and YOSHIKI were all announced as performers, with Hugh Jackman returning as host.
Figures like Gayle King, Bill Nye, Katie Couric, and chef Marcus Samuelsson were also scheduled to appear throughout the day.
Gates had been set to open at 2 p.m. with performances kicking off at 4 p.m. on September 26. Instead, the crews who built the whole thing are now the ones dismantling it, piece by piece.
There are a couple of details worth holding onto amid the disappointment. AllHipHop’s source confirmed that food prepared for the event will be donated to people in need rather than discarded, which is a small but real silver lining. Ticketholders are also expected to receive refunds, according to the same source.
Global Citizen’s model makes this cancellation hit differently than a standard concert getting rained out. The organization ties access to festival tickets directly to advocacy actions, asking attendees to take steps toward fighting extreme poverty in exchange for their spot on the lawn.
This year’s campaign was focused on education, support for smallholder farmers, and expanding access to electricity in underserved communities. All of that momentum now has to find another outlet.
CBS New York had flagged the incoming nor’easter as early as Thursday, reporting that heavy rain and strong winds were expected by Saturday.
At that point, organizers were still holding out hope, deferring to the Parks Department on the final call. By the time crews started breaking down the stage, that call had clearly been made.
The Fugees anniversary performance was already a rare thing. Hill and Wyclef don’t share stages often, and a full “The Score” celebration would have been the kind of moment fans replay for years.
Whether that performance gets rescheduled, moved to another venue, or quietly shelved is still very much an open question.
