After a round of psychiatric evaluations, a Los Angeles judge has decided Ivanna Ortiz is fit to face a jury. Ortiz is the woman accused of opening fire on the Los Angeles home shared by Rihanna and A$AP Rocky, and the competency ruling means her case can finally move toward trial.
The decision came down this week, according to Complex. The judge told Ortiz directly that she will be going to trial, closing a chapter that had put the case in a holding pattern.
The charges she faces are heavy. Prosecutors have filed counts of attempted murder, assault with a semiautomatic firearm, and shooting at an inhabited dwelling or camper, and a conviction could carry decades of potential prison time.
A competency ruling is not a verdict, and it says nothing about guilt or innocence. Under California law, it means the court believes a defendant understands the proceedings and can work with their attorney on a defense.
That process exists to protect the accused as much as anyone, which is why evaluations like the ones Ortiz went through can take time.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman has made his office’s position very clear. “Opening fire in any populated neighborhood is extremely dangerous, puts lives at risk, and will be fully prosecuted,” he said when the charges were announced.
Hochman also pointed out the one piece of good news in all of this. “Thankfully, no one was injured in this shooting, but this careless violence will not be tolerated in our community,” he said. “Such shooters will find their next destination to be our jails and prisons.”
For fans, the scariest part is who could have been inside. Rihanna and Rocky have been one of music’s most closely watched couples for years, and they’re raising their young family together in Los Angeles. The idea of gunfire hitting their home has understandably rattled a lot of people who follow them.
This also isn’t Rocky’s first time at the center of a Los Angeles courtroom story. In February 2025, a jury acquitted him of felony assault charges tied to a 2021 incident involving his former A$AP Mob associate Terell Ephron, known as A$AP Relli.
Rihanna was a visible presence in the courtroom during that trial, and this time the couple are on the other side of a criminal case.
Neither Rihanna nor Rocky has been quoted in the latest round of coverage, and the source material doesn’t include any statement from Ortiz’s legal team.
