Dancehall superstar Popcaan is among the host of artists featured on the 2K Beats soundtrack for the latest edition of the hugely popular video game, NBA 2K.

NBA 2K21, was released on September 4, for major gaming platforms and consoles including Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Stadia. The basketball sim is set to be available this week for next-gen consoles, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and Series S.

The videogame’s official Instagram account today shared the names of the artists that will appear on this year’s soundtrack of 150 songs including the Unruly Boss, 2Chainz, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Pop Smoke, and several others.  Popcaan was the only Jamaican entertainer to be included.

Popcaan’s contribution to the soundtrack is his song Promise which was included on his OVO produced album Vanquish (2019). The track itself was the lead single from the album and has been described as a seductive piece, demonstrating the versatility that the St Thomas native has on offer.

The singer debuted an official music video for Promise back in February which included scenes from his last trip to Ghana.

NBA 2K21 is the 22nd installment in the NBA 2K franchise and the successor to NBA 2K20. The game itself promises to bring to gamers new features such as enhanced graphics and improved gameplay and the soundtrack is expected to significantly contribute to the overall experience.

This is not the first time that Popcaan has been featured on such a playlist. He has previously been on NBA 2K17 and EA Sports NBA Live 16 through the song Good Times which also featured Jamie XX and Young Thug.

Fellow dancehall acts Buju Banton, Govana, Rvssian, and Koffee were also this year featured on another sports gaming franchise’s soundtrackThe main soundtrack for FIFA 21 includes Buju Banton’s track Unity from his latest record, Upside Down 2020. A separate playlist for its VOLTA experience features Koffee’s Rapture Remix with Govana as well as Rvssian’s collaboration with Rema, Beamer (Bad Boys).

2020 has really been a success story for Popcaan as he unveiled several massive collaborations with international artistes which has pushed him more mainstream.  The OVO signed artiste joined Maroon 5 on Nobody’s Love, Dave East on Unruly, Protoje on Like Royalty, Loski on Avengers, and Preme on their six-song Link Up EP.

He also dropped his full-length effort Fixtape in August to great acclaim.
