Protoje Taps Popcaan For ‘Like Royalty’ Collab Off His Upcoming Album: Watch
Protoje launched his gripping new music video today for his single Like Royalty, leaving his viewers with a little FOMO. The adventure-filled visuals take us to several cool locales around Jamaica and what looks to be Popcaan’s favourite little retreat on the island with cameos from the beautiful In.Digg.Nation posse, including Lila Iké, Sevana, and Jaz Elise.
The Reggae major, that is Protoje has a way of building anticipation when there is new music on the horizon, and that he did on Monday when striking photos of him and the Unruly Boss Popcaan appeared on his Instagram page. Not only did Protoje reveal that Like Royalty was dropping this Thursday but also that his 5th studio album In Search Of Lost Time comes out on August 28th. He shared the tracklist to include features from Koffee, Wiz Khalifa, Lila Iké and of course Poppy.
Like Royalty is an epic tale with Protoje as the main character. The musician shares his tough start in life, being broke and moving from one friend’s house to another while having to sleep on the couch. Now he says, “ If I eva make inna loooiiiiifeeeee (life), yuh a go be living Like Royalty,” in the way of a vow to those same friends that helped him when he was down.
The touching music video highlights the faces of these ‘friends,’ namely Stagga, Corrie, Eddie and Shakema as the lyrics goes. We see Protoje touring the scenic countryside in a troop of Jeeps and making a few stops along the way with these friends, his crew, alongside Lila and Sevana rocking out to the new jam.
Popcaan joins in just as they get to a familiar-looking spot by the river. He and Protoje drop the next part of the track stepping through a receded watercourse in one scene, then in another revving an ‘Unruly’ tagged white Jeep along the riverbank, which looks a lot like Poppy’s hometown of St. Thomas. Popcaan adds verses of a similar journey in life, “Count mi blessing dem, reaping di reward, make mi first mill ah’ member when mi use to starve/ Right now dem surprise how man ah live. Suh mi gain di blessings yo ah suh mi give,” he sings.
