Konshens Earns First Gold Certification In Canada For Doja Cat Collab ‘Wine Pon You’
Dancehall star Konshens has secured his first Gold certification in Canada for Wine Pon You, his 2018 collaboration with American rap sensation Doja Cat.
Music Canada issued certification on Monday (January 20) to commemorate sales and streaming equivalents exceeding 40,000 units in the country.
Wine Pon You was the fourth track on Doja’s debut studio album, Amala. Notably, it is the only track on the standard edition of the 13-track project to feature a guest artist.
Produced by Yeti Beats and Troy Nōka (who also provides uncredited vocals), the track sees Doja blending her pop-rap style with a sleepy, seductive melody, while Konshens delivers a dizzying Patois verse.
The song, which went viral on TikTok in 2022, has amassed over 356 million plays on Spotify and 72 million views on YouTube. Amala peaked at No. 138 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart and is currently certified Gold in the US (500,000 units) and Silver in the UK (60,000 units).
While he holds a Brit Certified Silver award in the UK for his 2016 anthem Bruk Off Yuh Back (which surpassed 200,000 units sold), this is Konshens’ first certification in Canada.
The success of Wine Pon You underscores Konshens’ reputation as one of Dancehall’s most reliable crossover partners—a status he is well aware of. Reflecting on when he realized he had become a “go-to” artist for international labels, Konshens pinpointed his 2015 hit Policeman with Dutch singer Eva Simons as the turning point.
“It was around 5 years ago with a track called Policeman with Eva Simons,” he told DancehallMag in a 2021 interview. “Then I started hearing what A&R’s were saying about me in meetings. If dem cyaan get Sean Paul, you know who dem ah call!” he laughed.
That call has rung frequently over the last decade. Since Policeman, Konshens’ international collabs have ranged from Latin trap anthems like Privado (with Rvssian, Nicky Jam, Farruko, and Arcangel) to Hip-Hop heavyweights like Cardi B (Back It Up) and the late Nipsey Hussle (Succa Proof).
He also did electronic pop on I Don’t Dance (Without You) with Matoma and Enrique Iglesias, and Afrobeats on the 2021 track Boom Bang with Davido.
