Flippa Mafia Remanded, Judge Finds He Can’t Afford Lawyer In New Jersey Drug Case

Flippa Mafia is staying behind bars for now after a brief New Jersey court hearing on Thursday, where a judge also found that he could not afford to hire a lawyer and appointed one for him.

The Dem Yah artist, whose real name is Andrew K. Davis, appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ann Marie Donio in Camden for a detention hearing on May 14, according to court records obtained by DancehallMag. The hearing lasted nine minutes, from 12:43 p.m. to 12:52 p.m.

Flippa, who was present in court, was advised of his rights before his private attorney, Tamika McCoy, was allowed to withdraw from the case. McCoy had entered an appearance for him earlier this week.

The court then determined that Flippa was financially unable to hire counsel and appointed Cherry Hill attorney Edward Borden to represent him under the Criminal Justice Act.

Prosecutors moved for detention during the hearing. Flippa consented, and Judge Donio ordered him remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending trial.

The detention order noted that Flippa did not give up his right to seek bail later.

Flippa Mafia, who is also known as Flippa Moggela, was arrested in a federal drug conspiracy case that prosecutors say involved at least 500 grams of methamphetamine, at least 400 grams of fentanyl, and at least five kilograms of cocaine between August 2025 and May 2026.

The criminal complaint, unsealed earlier this week, named Flippa along with Damion Jones, Clifford Brown, and James McBride. Prosecutors said the case was built on evidence from Flippa’s Apple iCloud account, intercepted phone calls, surveillance, and searches tied to alleged drug packages and suspected narcotics.

The complaint also painted Flippa as someone aware of the risks that had already cost him years in prison. In one intercepted call, he allegedly rejected the “boss” role because it had nearly exposed him to a life sentence.

In another, he talked himself out of buying a Lamborghini, saying the car would bring unwanted attention unless he first had a business to explain it.

The filings on Thursday noted that Flippa is charged with a drug offense carrying a maximum prison term of 10 years or more under the Controlled Substances Act.

The self-styled “Flossing King” was previously convicted of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and money laundering. He was paroled from state prison in October 2022 after serving nine years of a 25-year sentence.

Also known as Flippa Moggela, he built his name in Dancehall with flashy, high-energy shows where he often handed out cash to fans.

His songs include Repeat, Dem Yah, Mi Nuh Bruk, Unfinished House, Hear Mi Hear, Tak Dem A Talk, and Man Mix Up. He also appeared as “John John” in the 2002 Jamaican crime film Shottas, which starred Ky-Mani Marley and Spragga Benz.

In 2025, he resumed his music career, releasing tracks including Benz Pon Benz, Oh Please, Inna Mi Zone, and Be Like This.
