Shenseea says she has made several efforts to collaborate with Queen of Dancehall Spice, to no avail.  The Shenyeng princess was speaking to Angela Yee on The Breakfast Club on Friday (March 11), which marked the release of her debut album ALPHA.

Yee noted that it would be “pretty dope” for the two Dancehall royalties to voice a track together, but despite Spice airing out the matter several months ago, the Run Run singer claims she doesn’t know why she hasn’t been successful.

“I mean, I reached out a couple times. You feel me? But I don’t know (shrug),” the 25-year-old Jamaican star said.

The New York-based radio show’s host reiterated how successful such a single would be, and provided examples of male unity within the Dancehall fraternity when she listed Shaggy and Sean Paul as male acts who have teamed up with other artists.

“But I’ve been trying to work with female artists though. Yeah, like, I said that on my Live too,” she said, pointing to the December 2020 Live in which she vented to fans that she had been snubbed for collaborations by other female Dancehall stars.

“I’ve been trying to work with female artists. The only female artist that I’ve worked with is Nailah Blackman from the Caribbean island, Trinidad and Moyann from Jamaica. You feel me? So it’s not like o haven’t tried,” she added.

In June 2021, Spice took to Instagram Live and offered a reason why she had not yet collaborated with Shenseea, claiming that she was turned off by Romeich Major’s (Shenseea’s co-manager) alleged conduct.  “First of all, ah di big belly man make mi nuh do nuh song wid har,” Spice blurted out in reference to Major.

She revealed that there was a time when she and Romeich were “friends” and business partners. However, according to her and for no plausible reason, the producer began talking bad about her behind her back.

“Me and di girl (Shenseea) a talk bout collaboration. Yes, we talk bout it and more than one time. The reason why mi never do the collab ah because a di man (Romeich).  Di man walk a leggo him mout and talk some tings bout me weh mi hear back … So di people dem carry back the news come gimme say di man say dis and di man say dat and the man a bring me down and who badda dan me,” she said at the time.

“So mi just nuh go down in a dah energy deh cause me see seh you a build a little energy deh and remember mi nuh have luck with people. Nuh matter weh mi do fi dem. So mi just stay out a di energy … and ah dats why the song never get fi do,” she continued.

Meanwhile, just a week ago, Spice’s name came up during one of Major’s Instagram Live sessions, as he spoke about his contributions to artists and Dancehall culture.

“When unuh look and see Spice go sign to Sperone (Moscato) a who sign har? Me get da contract deh. So how unuh seh me badmind? When she go pon har first big Magnum show, Romeich book dat. Ask har. And no vibe no deh deh,” Romeich had said.

“She just seh weh she waan seh, and seh dis, and seh dat alright. Me respect har same way. I listen to her music. Me nah go stop listen. Once me like a song me aguh listen to it…and nobody can ever look pon me and ask who a the top five inna Dancehall and me nuh call har name. Never!” he added.

Since her big break came with a Vybz Kartel collaboration titled Loodi back in 2017, Shenseea has had better luck with male Jamaican artists. Her ALPHA album has two Dancehall collaborations, namely Henkel Glue and Lying If I Call It Love with Beenie Man and Sean Paul respectively.  She has also collaborated with Konshens, BEAM, Ding Dong, TeeJay, Tommy Lee Sparta, Shaggy, Jahmiel, Bugle, and Masego

However, according to Shenseea, not all of her outreaches to male artists have been successful.

“And even male artists that I haven’t collabed with yet either—I’ve sent songs or I’ve hit up. Like, yo, let’s make music…I feel like everything is time too, so it’s not anything that I’m chasing. It’s just I’m always trying to do things for my culture. I would lift my culture up. You feel me? That’s what I’m about,” she told Yee on Friday.
