Popcaan Says He Coined The Pandemic Slang ‘Outside’

Put some respect on his name. Dancehall artist Popcaan said he is responsible for coining the slang ‘outside,’ which became popular during the pandemic.

The catchy expression, often used by individuals who have seized the chance to be outdoors before curfew deadlines or lockdowns, has certainly picked up momentum since the coronavirus outbreak. Very often it is also used in somewhat of an “unruly” way, when persons are ‘outside’ beyond curfew hours.

Now the Unruly Boss is declaring proprietorship of the slang and is challenging those who are claiming it to step down.

“All me a telling some people, please remember the address fi the outside slang before try claiming it. #UNRULY!!! Killy them forever outside,” he tweeted yesterday.

In retrospection, Popcaan has been using the slang and hash-tagging it in his Instagram posts from as far back as May 2020, at the cusp of the outbreak in Jamaica.

“#outside new mixtape this month!!! #murdamurda” the deejay wrote on a post dated May 12, that promoted his Fixtape album.

Popcaan would go on to use the term in several other posts since leading up to his most recent ones.

It seems those trying to steal the Unruly Boss’ glory have gotten the Dancehall celebrity out of his social media hiatus.

Poppy hasn’t been seen online since April, which is quite uncharacteristic of him as he’s always quick to keep his fans in-the-know and share his many escapades.

Apparently, his run-in with the St. Thomas traffic police that month rubbed him the wrong way. The Family deejay was slapped with several traffic offenses and subsequently expressed feeling “targeted” by the cops.

Shortly after, Popcaan went MIA online but popped up on other celebs IG pages. He was seen in posts made by Italian footballer Moise Kean, Dancehall star Skillibeng, Reggae artiste Zamunda and at Jahvillani’s Dirt to Bentley album launch party.

The deejay’s most recent releases include Deserve You with Brooklyn drill rapper Casanova, Sekkle & Bop with Dre Skull, and Mr Eazi, and his track Find Dem, which dropped last week.  He also made a cameo in Why Not with American rappers Migos this summer.
