Dancehall artist Mavado is determined to “bounce back like abracadabra” from his recent woes, pouring out his pain in not one but two new upful tracks.

Never Give Up and We Nah Listen are hard-hitting meditations on life’s dilemmas, relatable as ever to Gully fans, yet casting a spotlight on the star’s recent troubles. Mavado covers it all — snakes, survival, his mom’s sudden passing and his son’s murder charges with his rugged, take-no-prisoners lyricism.

Both tracks quickly hopped on Top 10 YouTube Trending in Jamaica as the Gully God offloaded the weight of the last few weeks. We Nah Listen sees Mavado lashing out at corrupt and covetous elements at work in society, and it brings to mind the Hope and Pray deejay’s IG rant following his son’s murder conviction.

“Corruption corruption corruption Jah know star!” he said in the caption. “It’s like my son was found guilty before trial, but I’m going to point out everything and the injustice one day at a time.”

Mavado got to work immediately, and he quotes his recently deceased mom, Ms. Pinny, who he called his “best friend”,  as he goes all-in with his rough-edged vocals.

“Mama seh dem ah go watch out mi business but leff fi dem own fi spoil/ Ah nuff ah dem want mi mash up inna life but mi learn dat ah part ah life/ Every yute from di ghetto haffi rise/ P—y dem siddung waan see mi capsize/ Mi God already, bad already so mi nah fi seh twice / Nah, neva see a elephant a swat flies,” he spits on the track.

He also takes a jab at Jennifer Messado, the since disbarred attorney who allegedly defrauded Mavado of $31 million dollars in a crooked real estate deal. “Cyah ketch me flat footed again tell dem ah couple mil mi spend,” he spits.

Meanwhile, Never Give Up has already entered Top 3 Trending and with good reason. The pain in Mavado’s vocals is palpable and the vivid lyrics have found favour fast.

“Jah know, i’m here listening to this song and crying hard like a child… i feel your pain Gully God .. Stay Strong,” one fan offered in the comments, while another said, “With all the struggles him and the family going through right now Still motivating others going through hardships 🙏🙏🙏GullyGad.”

Tackling his son’s incarceration and of course, mentioning his mom, Mavado unravels some harsh realities.

“When dem seh real jus know ah nuh everybody/ Dem par wid enemies and dem ah friend Squaddie/ Nuh dig nuh hole for demself but dig ten for me me/ Mama sen up di prayer dem for me/ Close walk, me an Jah Jah have a close walk/ Right now me have mi enemies ah talk/ But dah song yah is a dagger to dem heart,” Mavado sings.

For all he’s currently dealing with, the deejay’s lament is a lyrical thrill, assuring fans at one point “dem waan get mi down but mi up like Viagra”.

One of the track’s bittersweet lines, “Mi haffi mek it through di storm no matter what ah gwaan/ how much real yute weh gone, mi son a run remand..”, shows the deejay’s resilience at a time where despite the trials, some level of progress has already been made.

Dancehall deejays Popcaan and Bounty Killer have come forward to offer their support during this rough time despite their differences with the Cassava Piece native.

“Keep yo meds firm up same way singer, keep fighting the fight, condolences to you and your family, tough times for everybody, stay up!” Popcaan wrote to the deejay on IG. Bounty Killer sent his support after Mavado’s teenaged son was sentenced to life in prison: “my heart is wrenching and any man with young sons would be” the Warlord wrote.
