The inspiration for Beenie Man’s latest single Fun in the Sun came to him while he was visiting his mother’s gravesite.  Beenie Man’s late mother, fondly called Mama Lilieth, died last September 2020.

Even though the Dancehall veteran was working assiduously on the album, Simma, it seems he is still grieving for his mother. He made the revelation to the Jamaica Star during a welcoming party hosted on the social networking app Clubhouse.

He said that he constantly seeks to be in her presence and often ventures down to St. Elizabeth, where he built a two-storey house dedicated to her. Sadly, Lilieth Sewell died after recovering from a series of strokes. The two were very close and during her funeral Beenie Man, whose real name is Anthony Moses Davis, briefly lost consciousness.

“Mi madda is my best fren, enuh, like seriously, that’s why me down a St Elizabeth so regular [of late]. She nuh deh a town nuh more, she bury down deh so I go talk to my mother,” he said. The house was built in Shrewsbury, which was her birthplace. He also shared that the room where her remains were laid to rest at the house has two red sofas, along with a large and personalized photograph of her.

“Me nuh know if you love your madda like how me love mine, but if you do, you will understand,” he added. Their conversations sometimes focus on his music as well.

“This was last week Sunday and I just wanted her to know what I was doing, mi just want she bless me and mek it happen. I got up on Sunday morning around six o’clock because she usually would wake up from five, so me have to check in with her when me get up,” he continued.

The music that he was looking for advise on was the recently released Fun in the Sun which is the first single off the Simma album. The song his dedicated to Mama Lilieth. He added: “is not so much the lyrics or lines, is which part me write the song … which was by mi madda grave. That’s where the idea came to me, right at the graveside.”

The song mirrors Sean Paul’s call for more unity in dancehall. “With this song, we are trying to unify or bring more unity to dancehall,” Beenie Man continued. Popcaan and Dre Island are featured on the track even though the song wasn’t originally penned for them. He explained that the collab only came about after they got together.

He’s currently awaiting a release date for Simma, which will include a lot of other collaborations. “It’s a lot more collaborations; nobody nuh have anything to do, everybody deh a Jamaica so we link up in the studio a mek songs. Artiste can sit back in them studio, and me can go check a Shaggy or go Sean Paul studio fi check him. Otherwise, they would be on tour or me woulda deh pon tour,” he added.
