Dancehall’s very own Kimiko Versatile – a choreographer and leader of an all-girl dance crew; the Versatile Ones – appeared in a Netflix Original titled MOVE, which premiered last Friday.  The documentary series exposes the realities behind the passion and drive of dancers around the world and what it truly takes to taste success in their industry.

“I am super excited and so grateful to be featured in this documentary. It means a lot to me to show the world what I am capable of doing and the work that I have been doing in a male-dominated space,” Kimiko told FAME FM in a recent interview.

MOVE follows the inspiring stories of five dedicated dancers and their genre from the USA, Bangladesh, Spain, Jamaica, and Israel in the familiar fashion we now expect from Netflix – dissecting and divulging the backstories of their home life, upbringing, inspirations, aspirations and achievements and how it all culminates into their ultimate decision to dedicate their lives and bodies to the art of movement.

In her almost hour-long episode Kimiko candidly discusses her childhood dreams of one day becoming a Star and promising to make her mommy proud despite their hiccups and hardships. Viewers get to witness her during her daily life of being not only a dancer but a daughter, mother, entrepreneur, and a Jamaican black woman.

“Dancehall is a way where express myself, my black body, express myself as a strong female,” Kimiko says during the episode.

Kimiko openly talks about her journey from country to town as a shy “country girl” and how she eventually made her way to in the middle of the dancehall where she finally found confidence enough to take up space as a powerful woman in the Dancehall.

“I was scared at first but when I saw everybody dancing and the whole vibes and people just not caring what was happening at that moment, it felt like a spiritual space so I felt like I was among my peers.”

We also get the privilege of peeking in on her creative process through her storytelling, scenes of her with crewmates in her studio, and eventually in full gear at a customary clash against all-male dance crew the Sopreme Blazzaz led by Killer Bean.

This episode also features Lacadco’s L’Antoinette Stines – Kimiko’s admiring mentor and the renowned Cultural Doctor, Dr. Stanley Niah. Through their insights, viewers are informed about the roots of Dancehall, the evolution of the roles assigned to men and women, and the nightly ritual of laying your troubles down in the Dance forsaking the struggles faced outside the solace of the sound systems.
