Popcaan

Popcaan, otherwise known as Andrae Hugh Sutherland began making a name for himself when he joined Vybz Kartel’s Gaza Music Empire. Since then, he has been writing and making music to please millions of people around the world, as well as working with numerous international artists, including Drake, Gorillaz, and Matoma.

Popcaan was born on July 19, 1988, and he does most of his work from the parish of St. Thomas in Jamaica. He ended up spending most of his earlier years growing up in Portmore, in S. Catherine. He has been active in music for over a decade, working with labels Mixpak and OVOSound.

He began his career officially in 2007 at a local jam he was attending known as “My Scheme,” where Kartel brought him into his group – the Portmore Empire. Over time, Kartel would become a producer and a mentor, working with Popcaan along the way. Kartel even took Popcaan to some of the larger shows, such as Reggae Sumfest. During this time, Popcaan began making his own music.

Over the past years, Popcaan has been collaborating with other music artists and releasing songs that have been well-received by both fans and critics alike. During 2018, Popcaan would end up releasing his second album, titled as Forever out on the 20th of July that year. This album would reach the Number 2 position on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. Later that year, on December 23, Drake would make an announcement that he was signing Popcaan into OVOSound.
