Two billion streams. That is the number Apple Music pointed to when it named Drake its Best Rapper of 2026, noting that ICEMAN became “the first 2026 rap album to cross 2 billion streams” and cementing what the platform framed as his return to the top of rap’s hit machine.

The announcement landed on Tuesday, and it caps a year that started with plenty of people wondering where Drake actually stood.

Apple Music called it his “loudest comeback in years,” built around a three album release weekend that covered rap, R&B and dance music all at once.

That weekend brought ICEMAN, HABIBTI and MAID OF HONOUR into the world together, a move Apple Music described as a genre spanning gamble that “landed as critical and commercial lightning.”

Dropping three full projects in one go is a big swing for anyone, even an artist with Drake’s catalogue and track record on the charts.

ICEMAN carried most of the weight. Apple Music said the rap album “did the heaviest lifting commercially,” and HotNewHipHop’s Alexander Cole went further, calling it the biggest hip hop release of the year.

HABIBTI and MAID OF HONOUR gave him room to stretch into R&B and dance, lanes he has worked in since the early days of his career.

The word comeback matters here because of the road that led to it. In 2024, Drake was on the losing end of a very public battle with Kendrick Lamar, which peaked with “Not Like Us” becoming one of the biggest songs of that year.

Drake later took legal action against Universal Music Group over the track, a fight that kept the feud in headlines well into 2025.

Through all that, he kept releasing music, including the 2025 joint album with PartyNextDoor, $ome $exy $ongs 4 U.

The difference in 2026 is that the conversation has shifted from what he lost to what he is putting up, at least according to the platforms tracking the numbers.

Not everyone reads it the same way, though. HotNewHipHop framed the award as a victory lap and closed its coverage with a message to doubters, saying that “if you’re a hater, you’re not going to like what’s coming next.”

Others will ask if a flood of three albums proves staying power or simply floods the streaming counts, a debate that has followed Drake’s bigger releases for years.

There is also the question of how much a streaming service’s year end honor reflects anything beyond its own data.

Apple Music is rewarding what its listeners played the most, which is a real measure of reach, but a different thing from the critical consensus that award season tends to chase.

Either way, Drake is not slowing down. He is heading out on tour in 2027, and demand is expected to be heavy in every city on the schedule.

With awards season still ahead and more year end lists on the way, the Apple Music nod looks more like an opening move than a final verdict on his year.
