The meaning of Popcaan’s “Everything Nice” comes down to gratitude and balance. The song celebrates working hard and still making time to unwind.
Mixpak Records, the label that released it, described the track as reflective and casually nostalgic, balancing hard work with holding a meds, and said the song is dedicated to his fans and their struggles.
In a March 2014 write up, LargeUp read it the same way, saying Popcaan sings about balancing hard work and good times and that he was expressing his gratitude on the record.
Release and Credits
Mixpak released “Everything Nice” as a single on 1 October 2013, calling it the first single from his much anticipated debut album, which was expected in early 2014 at that point. Dubbel Dutch produced the minimal riddim, which sits between dancehall and hip hop.
Streaming credits list Marc Glasser as composer and Andrae Sutherland as lyricist, with Mark “Exit” Goodchild mixing and Chris Gehringer mastering. Andrae Sutherland is Popcaan’s legal name.
The song later appeared as track two on Where We Come From, his debut studio album, released on 10 June 2014 by Mixpak Records.
Dre Skull executive produced the album, with production from Dre Skull, Dubbel Dutch, Jamie Roberts, Anju Blaxx and Adde Instrumentals.
The album entered the Billboard Reggae Chart at number two and produced the singles “Everything Nice” and “Love Yuh Bad.
The Lyrics Explained
The song is built around a toast. In the hook, Popcaan says he is dedicating the moment to people who work hard every day toward their goals, then remembers loved ones who have died and asks listeners to raise their cups.
The verses mix party details, like Hennessy, refilled cups and music played loud, with shout outs to people working nine to five jobs. He also names students at two Jamaican universities, UWI and UTech, telling them to take a break from exam stress.
So the title is not a claim that life is easy. It is about how it feels to reward yourself after you have put in the work.
The song also has a sadder side. Reviewing the track and video, Afropop Worldwide said the sparse production and very slow tempo give it a serious feel, drawing out a matter-of-fact melancholy in Popcaan’s voice that was rarely heard before.
The same review noted the irony that “few songs called ‘Everything nice’ make things sound less so.” Mixpak’s own description said that as Poppy whiles his worries away, the track melts with the vocal, leaving a bittersweet blissfulness.
That tension matches the album as a whole. In an essay quoted on Mixpak’s Bandcamp page, musicologist Wayne Marshall wrote that whether the songs are odes to the ghetto or the good life, Popcaan’s lyrics hold realist portraits and utopian visions in dynamic tension.
The Music Video
Jay Will directed the video, and Carleene Samuels produced it. LargeUp covered its release on 7 March 2014 and described it as sleek, black-and-white, and as stripped-down and laid-back as the song itself.
Popcaan sings in front of a white background while friends including Ace Hood, Mavado, Gyptian, Jah Cure, Dre Island and Chi Ching Ching join him on camera.
According to Wikipedia, the video passed 5 million YouTube views, but no date is given for that figure.
The Mavado Remix
A remix featuring Mavado followed. Audiomack and Apple Music list April 7, 2014 as its release date, and The FADER streamed it on 8 April 2014. Wikipedia’s Mixpak discography dates the remix to 2013, so the sources disagree on the year.
Boomshots reported that Mavado had appeared in the video, passing through the shoot with his We The Best labelmate Ace Hood, and pointed out that the two artists had worked together before on “Lighters Up” with Snoop Lion, which Dre Skull produced.
Reception and Legacy
In October 2014, NPR added the song to its Songs We Love series, summing it up as Popcaan shouting out everything he is thankful for over sunset synths.
Wikipedia lists “Everything Nice” among Popcaan’s international singles, alongside “Only Man She Want”, “Ova Dweet”, “El Chapo”, and “Family.
The song also shaped a later crossover. “Feeling Right (Everything Is Nice)” by Norwegian DJ and producer Matoma, featuring Wale and Popcaan, was released on October 16, 2015, by Parlophone Records.
It uses the choruses, one bridge and one verse from Popcaan’s “Everything Nice”, with Wale performing the other verses.
The song’s parent album has kept its reputation too. In November 2024, Mixpak released a 10-year deluxe edition of Where We Come From with three previously unreleased tracks, according to Coda Music.
