A$AP Rocky finally gave Rihanna fans the update they had been begging for, and he has spent the weeks since wishing he had kept quiet.
“It was hell,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in a video posted to Instagram on Oct. 18. “Yeah, I shouldn’t have done that.”
The rapper didn’t want to dig the hole any deeper either. Asked about his partner’s music plans, he laughed it off with a simple “I wanna mind my business.”
The slip that started all of this came in August on The Jason Lee Show. “She in the studio right now. Yeah, I said it.
Sorry, babe,” Rocky said, adding that “she working” and “she cooking.” He seemed to sense the risk in real time, joking, “Damn, I’ma get in trouble for this.”
For a fan base that has waited a decade since Anti, that was all the fuel needed. People who still have the island bounce of “Work” and “Rude Boy” on repeat sent talk of the album they’ve nicknamed R9 into overdrive. Rocky apparently felt the heat at home.
Rihanna, for her part, hasn’t exactly been hiding the ball. During an Oct. 6 TikTok Live for Fenty Beauty, she suggested she has roughly 170 unreleased songs sitting around. If there are 10 products in a vault, then I have at least 17 vaults,” she said.
She’d dropped hints earlier in the year too. In a February Instagram video she told her team, “I have to go to the studio after this,” before mentioning she also had to make a Mardi Gras costume for her son afterward.
The other side of the story is that quantity has never been her problem. Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar in 2025, she explained why so much of that material stayed on the shelf.
“It’s not matching my growth. It’s not matching my evolution. I can’t do this. I can’t stand by this. I can’t perform this for a year on tour,” she said.
That pressure is self imposed, and she knows it. “This much time away from music needs to count for the next thing everyone hears,” she added. “It has to count. It has to matter.”
Rocky’s caution makes more sense when you remember how long these two have been creatively tangled up.
They performed “Cockiness” together at the 2012 MTV VMAs, toured together in 2013 and released the “Fashion Killa” video that same year. According to Rihanna, their romance didn’t begin until the end of 2019.
Now they’re raising three kids, RZA, Riot and their daughter Rocki Irish Mayers, whose birth Rihanna announced in September 2025. Between family life, Fenty and those 17 vaults, she clearly has plenty on her plate.
Fans will keep dissecting every studio sighting and offhand comment for clues. Rocky, at least, seems done playing messenger. For now, the vaults stay locked, and the one person who knows what’s inside them isn’t saying.
