If you’re looking up the meaning of “Drift,” the short answer is that Teejay’s 2023 hit is named after a dance. Jamaican dancer Gabbidon came up with the dance first, and Teejay wrote the song to go with it.
In a June 2023 interview, Teejay told the Jamaica Observer that “Drift is a dance created by Gabbidon, and Gabbidon reach out to mi and seh, ‘Yo, mi wah yuh bring dis to life.'”
The Observer also noted that the dance was created before the track was even recorded.
The Story Behind the Song
Gabbidon tried several artists before Teejay agreed. In a June 2023 interview with The Fix, reported by DancehallMag in November 2023, he said he had approached several deejays to create a “dancing song” surrounding the Drift dance, but to no avail, that is, until Teejay acceded.
Many of them told him they didn’t really do dance songs. He finally pitched it to Teejay at Rebel Salute.
Gabbidon said the move was initially a simple foot movement akin to Elephant Man’s Log On before he built it into something bigger.
Speaking to DJ Davda on Kiss Fresh in late 2023, Teejay said the dance existed “from December last year. Mi just get di riddim in March from Panda and then it was just history after.”

In a July 2023 Instagram Live, Teejay said Panda sent him the riddim, titled Banga Rock, on March 5. He recorded Drift in Miami, Florida, then sought to find the right producer to use as the face of the record.
He has called it the “fastest song” he’s ever created, and a 2025 report says he crafted “Drift” in under an hour after seeing Gabbidon’s dance.
Teejay nearly scrapped the song. He told BET in December 2023: “I swear, it was a shocker because ‘Drift’ was a throwaway song. It was going in the bin.”
Speaking to EBONY in 2024, he said the change of style was on purpose: “I’m more of a hardcore dancehall artist but at the time, I figured that hardcore lyrics weren’t taking us anywhere at this point.”
He also said he looked for “words that are simple, so the world can understand what you’re saying” after hearing Funk Flex talk about how Jamaican artists could break through internationally.
Teejay calls the song “definitely 90s Dancehall” and says Afrobeats elements were added “to give it that body, that happy sound that people need to hear.”
What the Lyrics Are About
The song isn’t a story. It’s a confident dancehall boast made for the dance floor. Lyric interpretation sites describe the narrator as a confident and assertive persona who is unapologetic about his lifestyle and actions.
One reading says the song is about the protagonist being confident and cool at a party, attracting attention from others, especially from female dancers who take their picture. The lyrics also mention jewellery, avoiding enemies and taking over the venue.
These readings come from fan and aggregator sites, not from Teejay, and one of them says outright that the meaning is of course subject to interpretation.
The visuals also play on the word “drift.” The first music video, directed by Lagikz, started with a car driving up and performing drifting stunts throughout the video. A later visualizer highlights Jamaica’s underground ‘Drift’ car competitions and bike culture.
Release Date: Sources Disagree
Sources give different release dates. Apple Music lists the song as released on April 21, 2023, and YARDHYPE gave the same date in 2023.
The Jamaica Observer (October 2023) said it was released in March via Panda/DJ Mac/Top Braff Music. A DancehallMag news report from October 2023 said Drift was released on June 30 after being recorded in Miami.
Credits and the Producer Dispute
Production is credited to DJ Mac, Panda, and, of course, Top Braff Music. In July 2023 a dispute became public.
Though Jason ‘DJ Mac’ McDowell is credited as the producer for the infectious track, the ‘Uptop Boss’ says the actual instrumentalist and producer is his Solid Agency mate, Panda.
