Popcaan’s “Family” is a dancehall song about loyalty. In it he honors the relatives and friends who stood by him before he was famous, and he warns about false friends.
The song came out in late 2017 on Delly Ranx’s Cotton Swab Riddim. It is still one of the most watched videos in the Unruly Boss’s catalogue.
Release Details and Production
Streaming listings date the single to autumn 2017. Shazam says Family was released on October 30, 2017 by Pure Music Productions – PMGJA, and Apple Music lists it as a single with 2 Songs.
The riddim promo appeared online a few days earlier: Dancehallarena posted a full promo tracklist on October 27, 2017, with Popcaan, Family (Radio) Popcaan, Family (Explicit) among the tracks.
In a 2017 report, Boomshots said Delly Ranks’ full “Cotton Swab Riddim” drops on iTunes November 17. Reports disagree on the exact date, so late October to mid November 2017 is the safest window for the song’s release.
Delly Ranx, whose name is also spelled Delly Ranks, produced the riddim through Pure Music Productions. JioSaavn states that Family is composed by Delroy Foster, which is Delly Ranx’s real name.
In a 2017 Jamaica Observer interview, the producer named the other artists on the riddim: “there’s Popcaan with Family, No Worries by Vershon, Better Days by Jah Wiz, Wanted by Versatile, Don’t Push Your Luck by I-Octane”, along with Bugle, Mr. Vegas, Gappy Ranks and others.
The song has since become one of the main credits on Delly Ranx’s résumé. A 2021 Observer profile listed Popcaan’s Family, Mavado’s Weh Dem A Do, and Sean Paul ft Chico Ganja Breed among his production successes, and a January 2024 Observer article repeated that list.
The Lyrics Explained
In the first verse, Popcaan says he loves his family deeply and would never hurt them. He also names the “real” brethren who have been with him from the start.
He recalls hard times, like buying three sardines and a pound of rice from the shop and running from police. His point is that people who weren’t there then don’t know what he went through.
When Boomshots reviewed the song in 2017, it said Popcaan’s idea of family covers his mom and dad, grandma, brothers, sisters, youths, as well as the “real real bredda dem” who know how struggle feel.
The intro sets up the song’s other theme. Popcaan says the one thing he hates most is a “friend killer,” meaning someone who betrays the people close to them.
The hook makes the same point. As Boomshots put it, “Can’t trick me and kill me,” Popcaan sings over this warm-and-easy bubbler, “No way, you mussi bloodclaat mad!”
In the second verse he sings about people trying to steal his energy and about informers. He says that for now he trusts no man or woman. His summary of that code is simple: “Man loyal to who loyal”.
He also says he doesn’t know if heaven is real, but he knows for a fact that not every man is real. He shouts out his Unruly associate Dre Island too, saying no evil can stop either of them.
The chorus puts appreciation for life next to his commitment to both his gun and his God. So the song mixes gratitude and faith with the wariness of someone who grew up around danger.
Popcaan was born in Saint Thomas Parish, Jamaica, and grew up in Portmore. He was raised in a housing scheme, or housing project, known as Gangsta City.
The Music Video and Reach
The official video was uploaded to YouTube with the credit 2018 Pure Music Productions / Unruly Ent. Popcaan’s official music video playlist lists it as Family (Official Video) Popcaan · 3:45.
Its view counts have grown over time, and the numbers depend on what is counted:
- A fan-compiled list from June 2021 put “Family” second among Popcaan’s YouTube songs, with Family, 51 million views.
- A December 2025 YARDHYPE report said His second most viewed song on the platform is ‘Family’ with 90 million views.
- In September 2026, KaboomMag reported that His 2017 hit “Family” has generated approximately 105 million views across its official music video and audio. Caribbean E-Magazine gave the same figure.
These figures measure different things, from a single video to video and audio combined, so they are not directly comparable. They do show that the song has kept drawing listeners for years.
Caribbean E-Magazine also described “Family” as one of the tracks that have developed digital lives extending far beyond their original release.
Where “Family” Fits in Popcaan’s Catalogue
Family” came out after Popcaan’s 2016 deal, when he signed with Canadian rapper Drake’s record label OVO Sound and Warner Records, and before his 2018 album Forever.
Unlike the Forever tracks, “Family” was a riddim single, not an album cut. Popcaan’s Wikipedia entry still lists it among his main releases: Popcaan’s international singles include “Only Man She Want”, “Everything Nice”, “Ova Dweet”, “El Chapo”, and “Family.
