Many of Jamaica’s public figures have joined hands in holy matrimony over the years, and though some ended in divorce—they are still pretty memorable. But, when it comes to who has had the ‘best’ wedding, King of the Dancehall Beenie Man says he’s undisputed in that category.

Speaking on the Let’s Be Honest podcast on Friday, the Girls Dem Sugar deejay says nobody has, and nobody will ever outdo his 2006 wedding to the ‘Lady of Dancehall’ D’Angel, regardless of how wealthy they are.

“My wedding a di baddest wedding! A diss dem a diss mi. My wedding a di baddest wedding,” Beenie declared.

“Yuh seet? a dat mi a tell yuh like dem nuh memba…if yuh doe know, yuh doe know. Suh yuh see if yuh doe know sh-t; doe say sh-t. Mi nuh haffi married again. Mi have di baddest wedding as a Jamaican. Nuh bwoy, nuh gyal—trus’ mi! None a dem.”

The 50-year-old entertainer was responding to a comment by host Jaii Frais, who said that influencer Shanice ‘Shanzi’ Allen and promoter Jermaule ‘Nino’ Adair, who wed in December 2022, had the ‘best’ celebrity wedding Jamaica has seen so far.

“Not even Usain Bolt. None a dem. Nuh care how much money dem have,” Beenie continued.

Two years ago, the retired sprinter told the Mirror that he “was definitely going to get married in the future.”

Bolt, whose net worth recently took a hit, shares three children with his partner of eight years, Kasi Bennett.

It is hard to argue with The Doctor that his wedding wasn’t indeed a spectacle.

In 2006, Beenie and D’Angel tied the knot at the Craighton Estate, Irish Town in an elaborate ceremony and reception.

The all-white nuptials, which were officiated by Reverend Al Miller, saw the who’s who from the different industries turn up to celebrate. Although the ceremony ran behind time, that did not detract from the excitement, particularly at the reception.

The newlywed husband briefly serenaded his blushing bride before passing the microphone to Vybz Kartel, who treated guests to his own freestyle.

“Firstly, mi haffi shake yuh han’ an’ welcome yuh to di club ‘cause as you know I’m Mr. Palmer,” Kartel had said at the time.

“Beenie Man seh him love Angel, him seh him a invite di dude name Kartel. Mi rise up up a di wedding an’ everything start well because di ring weh she have on a fi ten mill it a sell…” were the lyrics that he spat, earning an endorsement from the attendees.

Their son, Marco Dean came a short time after but the marriage was short-lived and ended 4 years later in 2010.

Besides D’Angel, Beenie has dated some other public figures including DHQ Carlene, and Former President of the People’s National Party’s Youth Organisation (PNPYO) Krystal Tomlinson.

He is currently dating British Jamaican businesswoman Camille Lee, who joined him at the MOBO Awards last November.

During the Let’s Be Honest interview, Beenie Man boasted that his impressive track record makes him a cut above the rest in the industry.

“Yuh si mi? My ting different from fi dem ting! Mi just waan yuh know still. A me deh wid di first Dancehall Queen weh neva get crown as Dancehall Queen which is Carlene. A she build Dancehall Queen business because a she come wid di nakedness an’ di likkle cut off ting roun’ yasso. A she build dat, an’ dats what a Dancehall Queen is before dem start get crown Dancehall Queen….Lady Patra an’ all a dem used to call demself Queen ‘cause dem used to par wid Carlene,” he explained.

Back in 1997, the deejay teamed up with Chevelle Franklyn on the track Dancehall Queen, which was an ode to his former beau. He, however, said that it was more beneficial to her career, than his.

“Dat impact mi girlfriend career, not mine…my career did done deh deh already suh it impact har further as a Dancehall Queen, dan when somebody a seh she was,” he said.

By all indications, Beenie is cordial with his exes, whom he shares children with.

In a 2020 interview, D’Angel had explained how her ex-husband flew all the way to England to propose to her, and after much convincing—she accepted. However, she said they fell apart quickly because they were on different trajectories in life.

“I had to divorce him too because mi realise seh people grow and they move on… Me wanted some different things in life,” she said at the time.

In an Instagram Live in 2021, the Living Uptown singer also said she has had no reservations about finding love after Beenie.

“Of course mi haffi find love again… it’s not like Beenie was the everlasting man for D’Angel and man nuh run pon mi,” she said. But for now, the singer says, “I am not rushing to find any love …or a relationship, I’m not desperate. When the right person comes along we see how that goes,” she added.
