After being one of the scores of party-goers ‘skinning it out’ at Cardi B’s ‘Passa Passa’ Dancehall-themed birthday bash last October, Boo’d Up singer Ella Mai says her Dancehall celebration would have Spice and Vybz Kartel as the guests of honor.  Speaking to Robert Bruce during an interview at Capital XTRA, Mai added that the incarcerated King Of Dancehall would obviously have to join via Zoom.

“If we’re doing a Dancehall party, Spice has to headline,” Ella Mai declared. “She was at Cardi B’s party, actually. And then maybe we can get Vybz Kartel. Like, a Zoom from Vybz Kartel.”

The multi-platinum British singer, whose mother is of Jamaican descent (her father is Irish), said her other specially invited guests would be the City Girls, Big Latto, Lil Simz, Silk Sonic, and ironically, former First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama.  Adding that all her guests would be sipping on tequila all night, Ella flexed her knowledge of Jamaican music culture when Bruce put her to a time challenge test.

RB: “The music, what’s the party starter? What song’s the DJ dropping for the party starter?”

Ella Mai: “Uhh, Romping Shop

RB: “The part when the party just goes crazy…drinks are getting thrown everywhere. What song is playing?”

Ella Mai: “Goodas Fi Dem by Tony Matterhorn”

RB: Slow jam…every man grab a girl, every girl grab a man. What’s the song?

Ella Mai: “Wine Slow by Gyptian”

RB: “What are we eating after?”

Ella Mai: “My grandma. My grandma’s gonna have to cook some ackee and saltfish, with dumpling…all of that”

The singer said she might actually bring the party to fruition for her birthday in November.

At Cardi’s highly attend event, Mai, 27, was waving the Dancehall flag high—from her fit to the dance floor.  She attended in a shimmery, see-through floral bodysuit with a top knot bun and signature baby tendrils in place.

But it was her dance floor skills that seemingly surprised both partygoers and social media onlookers when footage appeared of her bussing a nice ‘likkle’ wine on somebody’s son at the party. Kranium and Tory Lanez’s We Can (2016) was playing during the clip.

During her interview with Bruce, Mai said she never expected to get that much attention after ‘bussing that whine’.

“I was enjoying the music, and then I wake up the next day and I was everywhere and I was like, ‘God, why?’ Everyone was like, ‘she’s giving a serious whine…’ I’m like no, it’s actually very very regular. I feel like the angle made it seem like it was better than it actually was. You guys are giving me too much credit. But, it was a lot of fun,” she said.

Mai just released her sophomore album Heart on My Sleeve, which Mic describes as “a return to the intergenerational formula of love songs that landed her a double-platinum debut album and a prime spot on Ariana Grande’s world tour.”

The new 15-track album includes DFMU, Leave You Alone, and Not Another Love Song.  It’s projected to sell 20,000 units in the United States during its first week.

Her self-titled debut, which was released in 2018, included Whatchamacallit with Chris Brown, Shot Clock, Trip, and Naked.
