Cindy Breakspeare, the former partner of the late Bob Marley and mother of Damian ‘Junior Gong’ Marley, is behind the recent calls for the Reggae legend to be made a Jamaican National Hero.

The former Miss World’s latest bid was made last Wednesday (April 6) when she re-shared an Instagram post made by the Bob Marley Museum, which acknowledged the day the Jamaican music icon received the UN Peace Medal of the Third World.

The post captured a photo of Bob at the event, which was held at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York City on Thursday, June 15, 1978. It read in part, “Bob Marley was a champion for peace and his works continue to inspire and will live forever like his music.”

Breakspeare’s caption followed, “Bob Marley for National Hero… Yes, Yes… A thousand times yes.”

Breakspeare’s post was fully supported by fellow Miss World and Member of Parliament Lisa Hanna, who (the day prior on Tuesday, April 5th) had moved a resolution calling in parliament for the Order of National Hero to be conferred on the Honorable Robert Nesta Bob Marley, OM.

“Be it resolved that this Honorable House, in Jamaica’s 60th year of independence, call upon the Governor General to take the necessary steps for the national honor of Order of National Hero to be conferred on the international crusader for peace, love and equality, a global superstar, the Honorable Robert Nesta ‘Bob’ Marley,” Hanna announced at the House of Representatives.

Also in December, Opposition Senator Floyd Morris served notice that he would be tabling a motion in the Senate for Bob Marley as well as Jimmy Cliff, Louise Bennett Coverley (Miss Lou), and Usain Bolt to be named national heroes ahead of Jamaica’s diamond independence celebrations this year.

This is certainly not Cindy Breakspeare’s first call for Bob to be named a national hero. Earlier in February, while toasting the musician on his earthstrong, she took the opportunity “Wake up Jamaica” for the cause.

She shared an old photo of herself and Marley with baby Damian and wrote, “Happy 77th Birthday Bob!!! A global icon, a cultural phenomenon, a man who’s lyrics will remain on the lips of generations to come, & the father of my eldest son Damian. The inspiration of a lifetime & a Jamaican who should have been named a national hero years ago!!! Why is a prophet never honored in his own land??? Wake up Jamaica!!!!! It is more than time…🇯🇲❤🎼💛🥇💚”

The following day, Cindy posted again, stating, “The peoples hero…we need to make this official for Jamaica 60!!!!!❤🇯🇲💛🇯🇲💚.”

Last November, the calls resurfaced after Barbados, as the world’s newest republic, honored global superstar Rihanna with the title of National Hero.
