Jamaican singer Shenseea has shared how her family reacted to the many raunchy lyrics featured in Lick — her controversial, Pop-Soca fusion collab with American rapper Megan Thee Stallion.

Lick, which samples Denise Belfon’s Work, was released on January 21 with an accompanying music video that saw Shenseea in, perhaps, her most provocative scenes ever.

In an Apple Music 1 interview this week, the 25-year-old said that her folks have somewhat come to terms with her creative choices.  “At the end of the day I feel like my family has accepted that I will forever do what I want to express, myself how I want,” she told host Nadeska.

“I got comments from them too when I dropped this video, and they were saying ‘oh, they need condom for their ears’…,” she continued while laughing.

The Blessed singer emphasized that her range in music caters to fans of all ages, but Lick was created for mature audiences.

“I make songs for different ages but this specific song is for adults. And at the end of the day it is just another side of me expressing freely how I feel and how other women feel too. It’s a very confident song; it’s a bold song,” she explained.

In addition to assuming the role of co-director for the music video, Shenseea told Apple Music 1 that she also enjoyed making the scenes. “I really wanted to go all out for the video but the heels were my biggest enemy. But it was still a good vibe though; I enjoyed myself.”

Lick has since picked up 7.3 million views on YouTube. With the success of the song, the Run Run singer said she feels the timing was perfect, if the song had dropped earlier it wouldn’t have had the impact it did.

“It feels like this is the moment I have been waiting for all my life … I feel like everything happens at the right time as you know I roll with God. So if he says its time, then its time. And I feel like if it had happened two years ago, or three years ago, I wouldn’t be ready,” she said.

She continued, “It’s like I’m just so blessed to have that strong support system not just from my family and friends but from strangers whom I don’t know at all but I still help them through situations and they help me because sometimes the road does get rocky but then I remember that people out there genuinely love me.”

Lick will appear on Shenseea’s debut album Alpha, slated for release on March 11 via Rich Immigrants/Interscope Records, a joint venture headed by Rvssian.
