Dancehall diva Spice ruffled a lot of feathers on New Years Day after she posted a video on her Instagram page, instructing women who wear wigs and braids, to remove them and wash their real hair, to ring in 2022.

The video also took center stage on The Shade Room, with responses ranging from support to sarcasm to outright scorn, from many women, whom surprisingly, took offense to Spice’s recommendation for maintaining personal hygiene.

Spice’s caption lampooned women whose scalps were itching underneath their wigs due to unwashed hair, and who had a habit of hitting themselves in the head whenever they felt the need to scratch.  “Take those wigs off and wash your “Hair” since it’s a New “year” Happy New hair “Pun intended”. All those old braids from 2021 please stop beating your head 🤣😩🤣😂,” she wrote.

“Let me say something real quick to all the ladies out there.  Since its 2022 and it’s a new year.  For anybody that needs to hear this, take them wig off…wash your hair under the hair.. it’s a new year; wash your hair under the hair.   Let me see if I can say it another way.  Take the wig off; take the braids out, and wash your hair,” she had said in the video.

“OK, start afresh.  Let the hair breathe, it needs it.  It’s a new year.   Happy New Year,” the Reggae Grammy nominee had added.

Interestingly in the midst of the discussion, Spice later admitted, in response to a commenter on the Shade Room’s IG page, that she had not heeded her own advice.

“Did you wash yours Spice, huh?” lindalisapatel had written, to which Spice responded: “Not yet, I told myself too😂😂😂”.

Many of Spice’s fans had a field day on her page, laughing about the wig wearers’ predicament, while scolding and jeering those who were upset with Spice.

“I trying to figure out why people offended in the comments, y’all must do wash your natural hair or something,” libraladyjay said.

“Wow! So many people triggered by this reel. I didn’t know so many people don’t wash their hair (New Year or not)- looks like a lot of people needed this advice 🤣🤣🤣🤣😩💀,” rasdheda said.

One seemingly upset follower said that Spice was setting up herself with her comment, since she was a huge lover of wigs.

“You just set yourself up…so you as a weave wearing colorful at that …itchy itchy better never get caught on any platform scratching ya tacky weaves,” heartless_soul1011 wrote.

“For a person that wears wigs and weaves all the time this has to be your personal experience thanks for the advice❤️,” twinzs40 added sarcastically.

Spice seems to have struck a raw nerve, as there was a hail of vexed comments from other followers, some of whom claimed, she was being “disrespectful to other women” for giving hygiene advice. Based on the responses from some, it was as if the Cool It artiste had committed blasphemy.

“This is how to spread toxicity an this is just disrespectful to all woman including herself you see the mouth it can build us an destroy us spice your done,” one irate woman said.

“I stand strong in my belief that she’s insulting all the people who wears wigs in her unnecessary instructions on how to keep their hair clean beneath a wig – I’m sure Spice would “feel a way” if someone told her that,” another angry wig-wearer wrote.

Another upset woman bragged about her educational accomplishments, and said she was unfollowing Spice for her hair-washing orders.

“Right I’m unfollowing her I have 4 college degrees I know better so I’m doing better spice looks like she don’t bath sometimes yes I said it,” she wrote.

Over on The Shade Room, the caption sent many wig wearers into a tizzy, as personal attacks and demands for Spice to show her own natural hair rained.

“#PressPlay: Y’all better listen to #Spice and start 2022 off right and wash the hair UNDER your wig!! 😩🙌🏽,” The Shade Room caption of the video read.

There were also demands from some fans for Spice to show her natural hair, as many insisted they had never seen her in public with her real hair, while contending that she was the wrong messenger.

“But mi never see spice with out wig at least go natural for a day 😂😂😂😂,” missglamourous46 said.

“Said the lady who never goes without a wig. We the ppl need to see YOUR real hair,” cheesefield_finest said, evoking a mocking comment from thtboi_cj, who replied “cheesefield_finest she has Wore her real hair you just don’t wanna see it.

“She supposed to said that with her natural hair out 🙄,” inteemidator said while ms_821 added: “Meanwhile, I can’t even remember EVER seeing this woman’s real natural hair. Y’all ever see her letting her real hair take a break 🤔🤔”.

Then there were others who demanded that Spice lead by example, heed her own advice and remove her own wig first.

“Take off that colored wig with your light skinned makeup and go wash that makeup off your dark skinned face and match the skin tone 😂,” loveislove3caren jeered.

“She looks like a hypocrite, we don’t know if she regularly washes her own hair, she should worry about herself… She said all of that with a wig on HER head, we don’t know if she washed her hair, she needs to sit down, she’s making it seem like bw who wear wigs, don’t wash their hair. And she sounds Jamaican, don’t people bash locs and say they need to wash their hair? Bw please think before you speak publicly about each other, the world is watching and will use it against you,” worldsmostbeautifulwomen3000 said.

One follower ktammy, who came to Spice’s defence, said that the Guh Dung Deh artiste probably had good reasons for issuing the message whilst wearing a wig herself.

“She probably already took her wig off, wash her hair and put back on! For all the people saying she should have her hair out! Y’all want her on stage looking like Popcaan with her braid sticking out 🧐,” he wrote.

Others said that the Jamaican did not have the competence to be issuing style tips to anyone, and so should use her platform to talk about constructive matters instead.

“Spice shouldn’t be giving no hair or make or clothing advice. None what so ever,” shuchainzzzz said.

“Girl there is other shi$$ that need to be discussed. Like taking care of the poverty in Jamaica or help your neighbors in Haiti. It is a new year, use your platform to discuss investments for black people, going to congress to get that crime bill past, etc. Black celebrities have a platform that can make things happen in the black community but use it for BS as this. This why we are so far behind the wheel. Her country is struggling, and she is talking about BS,” ebony772021 said.

“I like spice but starting the new year shading women aint a good look. Most women wearing wigs are washing their hair so this seems very targeted, subliminal, and petty,” nunyabiztho said.
