Dancehall deejay Popcaan, like many others, is trying to make sense of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s apparent open marriage.  However, after the latest in their saga, the Only Man She Want deejay made a plea on the iconic actor’s behalf: “FREE WILL SMITH!!!”

In July 2020, the couple sent tongues wagging when Jada revealed on her Red Table Talk show that she had an affair with R&B singer August Alsina while separated from Will in 2015. Jada’s blithe description of the romantic relationship as an “entanglement” broke the internet, and the mass of memes with Will’s tearful face didn’t help matters either.

The Smiths made headlines again just days ago after another Red Table revelation, where Jada discussed the challenges of maintaining a healthy sex life. When guest Gwyneth Paltrow shared she’s having “the best sex of her life” as a newlywed, Jada made a stark comparison with her near thirty-year relationship with Will.

“It’s hard. The thing Will and I talk about a lot is the journey. We started in this at a very young age, you know, 22 years old,” Jada said. “That’s why the accountability part really hit for me because I think you expect your partner to know [what you need], especially when it comes to sex. It’s like, ‘Well, if you love me, you should know. If you love me, you should read my mind.’ That’s a huge pitfall.”

Jada’s remarks caused another media frenzy with many assuming her comments were yet another glimpse of trouble in paradise. The Girls Trip actress hit back almost immediately—“Stop making up headlines. Watch the @RedTableTalk I did with @GwynethPaltrow for yourselves. Will and I have NEVER had an issue in the bedroom. Thank you.”

However, some users have spotted a trend and aren’t convinced Jada isn’t on a campaign to (repeatedly) embarrass Will; it seems Popcaan is one of them.

“FREE WILL SMITH!!!” the Unruly Boss tweeted in all caps yesterday, earning mixed reactions in his comments.

Some sided with the Risky deejay, believing Will was a prisoner in his own marriage.

“The man is doing life,” one user wrote, while another alluding to possible ‘psycho business’ guessed “At this point…he probably has Stockholm syndrome lol.”

Others weren’t as amused. “From what? Let him sort out his mess, ” one user quipped, while another suggested, “Beyond saving! Bring him yard!”

Similarly in July, when American pop star Lizzo was body-shamed for her music video Rumors, Popcaan invited the curvy singer to shake off the backlash with some sunshine. “Don’t cry girl come to the islands,” he wrote, tagging the Truth Hurts songstress in his Stories.

The gesture is one of several where the El Chapo deejay played chaperone to his US cohorts, including rappers Migos, Rich the Kid and Dave East in recent times. Will wasn’t tagged in the deejay’s post, but as one fan commented with several laughing emojis, “You know it’s serious when Popcaan gets involved.”

Those looking out for the Ali actor may be in for more surprises too.

Will’s eponymous memoir, which contains even more brave details on his life, debuts on Tuesday (Nov. 9) and was written with the help of Mark Manson, author of the bestseller The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F—k.

Smith sat down with Oprah Winfrey to discuss the memoir on her AppleTV+ series The Oprah Conversation, and he told the media mogul that he believes it’s ‘fantasy’ that he and his wife can make each other happy.

“We realised that it was a fantasy illusion that we could make each other happy. We agreed that she had to make herself happy and I had to make myself happy,” Smith told Oprah, according to The Independent.

“Then we were going to present ourselves back to the relationship already happy – versus demanding that the other person fill our empty cup.”

Meanwhile, Popcaan was back in Jamaica last week for a scheduled court date, after living it up in Ghana, eating fufu and flexing in his kente drip and matching kicks. The deejay who’s been “changing time zones rapid” since the second half of 2021 is expected to drop the FIXTAPE follow-up next year, and is gearing up to grace the stage at Popcaan: Live In The Gambia on January 15, 2022.
