Jamaican Dancehall fans peppered Torey Lanez with rebuke after the Canadian rapper lauded US sprinter Sha’carri Richardson, who placed last in the 100m at the Wanda Diamond League, and ignored the three Jamaican women who swept first, second and third places.

On Saturday, Olympic champion Elaine Thompson took victory in the Women’s 100m race at the Prefontaine Classic, the Eugene leg of the Wanda Diamond League, in a national record time of 10.54 seconds.  Her compatriot Shelly-ann Fraser-Pryce was second in 10.73 seconds, while Sherika Jackson, who equaled her personal best of 10.76 seconds placed third.

However, Tory Lanez, who has a penchant for Jamaican music and has had a slew of collabs with Jamaicans, posted three tweets praising the American, an action that upset nationals of the island.

“Sha’carri ran a great race, not because she Won or lost … because through all the adversity she got up and RAN AGAIN, and GAVE IT HER ALL … she went through a lot of within that last month … n-ggas be on the app preaching all this “uplift” our queens.. Then tear em down,” he wrote in his first tweet.

His first reaction was met with umbrage by Readytobeontv, who immediately pointed out the slight.  “The way you feed off Jamaican culture, I’m surprised you have time to type anything but congrats,” he wrote.

Like Readytobeontv, deandria87 was just as incensed, pointing out that Lanez was seeking attention. “@torylanez, But did you congratulate the winners tho or mentioned the other American that was in the race NO didnt she do a good job also?.yall always jump on trending topics for clout,” she wrote.

She was supported by kedoo who added: “An everytime him a have up Dancehall tunes Inna him song dem fi dem hot kmt”

Another Jamaican who stormed over to his page was inimuzik1,  who ordered him to desist from associating himself with Jamaican music or its culture. “Don’t sample reggae or dancehall music, don’t use the instrumentals and dont utter being 1/4 Jamaican out of your mouth… don’t speak patois and always remember that Megan drama,’ he declared.

Tory Lanez is well noted for dabbling in Dancehall music.  Several years ago he sampled veteran Jamaican dancehall vocal duo Tanto Metro and Devonte’s 1997 hit single Everyone Falls In Love in his single titled LUV.  The track went on to peak at number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Last year, Lanez teamed up with Buju Banton for a remix of Trust, and few months ago, the Call Me If Remix with Dexta Daps and Louie Culture.  He has collaborated with a slew of other Jamaicans including Keznamdi with the single City Lock.

Despite the protestations of the Dancehall fans, Tory Lanez remained unmoved.  He subsequently made a second post highlighting Sha’carri’s off-track exploits.

“It be cool to support n-ggas when they get a video with Kanye tho …. All I’m saying is … don’t choose to be supportive to the people you champion when it’s convenient… BE REAL AND SUPPORTIVE 2 PEOPLE through they UPS AND DOWNS,” he wrote.

In his third, post, which happened to be the most controversial and which placed him squarely in the Jamaicans’ line of fire, Lanez noted:

“SHA’CARRI …. KEEP FIGHTING.. WORKING .. AND PRACTICING !!! AND GO HARD AT YO CRAFT ! … YOUR TIME IS COMING … CAUSE GOD SAID SO !!!!”

Brushing aside his note bout God, the Jamaicans doubled down on their call for him to acknowledge the nation’s athletes, some referencing his shooting incident involving Megan Thee Stallion, for greater effect.

“You forgot dickriding Jamaican music gave you your position? Don’t you have a case coming up??!?!?!” dicedapplez wrote.

Others like whap dem insisted that the Canadian should pay his respects to especially Elaine Thompson.

“My guy how about some congrats to the fastest woman alive while you’re at it… don’t forget you take from the culture so at least send some congrats,” he id while Salute_Yan dded: “That’s good & all however you could congratulate the winners as well then!! You’re obviously enamored by the culture & music of.

“@torylanez Why you nah congratulate the Jamaicans woman dem. You come from Toronto and being around us your whole life. Ok I see how you flex goof,” Ganja Girl said.
