Trust Jamaican singer/songwriter Tessellated to treat his fans to a ‘sweeter’ summer. The genre-fusing singjay revealed his latest effort, a short film/musical team-up with reggae rootsman Protoje called Sweeter set to be released on June 29.

The original track appears on his Tropics Vol. 1 EP, which made Tidal’s Rising Artist Cover as well as Album Of the Week after its 2020 release.

Directed by Gabrielle Blackwood, (Clarks & Jamaica, ReMastered: Who Shot The Sheriff) the mini-movie promises to be a dramatic display based on the hi def cinematic poster alone.

Tessellated first broke onto the scene in 2017 with the chill and carefree single Pine & Ginger. Not long after, the crooner scored with Apple when his neo-soul hit I Learnt Some Jazz Today landed in the tech giant’s AirPods commercial, and was subsequently nominated for a Prime Time Emmy Award. Since then, his own flair for theatrics in his music videos has come out in full effect as his wide-ranging musical instincts align with island-based visual concepts.

From the fisheye lens view of New York’s cityscape in the I Learnt Some Jazz Today music video, to the pink-tinged parties and panoramas seen in Tropics, Tessellated makes a point of giving fans a dynamic and authentic showcase.

There’s minimum details on Sweeter except for the artwork teaser for now, as well as a few behind-the-scenes snaps with the leading men.

Protoje looks menacing as ever in head-to-toe black, while Tessellated is laid back as usual, showing off his warm tone (and more) in a shirtless suit. There’s no obvious tension between the two on set, but the poster suggests a brewing love triangle.

The song’s lounge vibe balances blazing horns and flamenco touches, as the two swap verses about a love interest.

“Sweeter, di likkle mamacita/ Come een like a tease, yeah/ Ah coulda neva leave har, no no”, they sing on the chorus. The original song is only two minutes long, however, the extended visuals will no doubt add a buzz to the catchy, sultry sounds from two of the island’s most gifted talents.
