It appears comments tweeted by American rapper and producer T-Pain a few days ago that music producers should be given more recognition than artists, have struck a chord with at least two of Jamaica’s biggest Dancehall producers.

Last week Sunday T-Pain, who is known for popularizing Auto-Tune, took to Twitter to state said that he believes producers deserve more credit than they receive, and that music lovers should give all the accolades to producers for making the beats to the songs they find endearing.

“The producers are the ones that deserve all the clout because y’all really don’t be liking these songs, y’all really just like the beats,” he tweeted. “When you hear a certain producer’s tag, you don’t give a f-ck who’s on it because you know you gon like the beat. Give them they flowers fr,” he tweeted, and as reported by HotNewHipHop.

A day later the Bartender artist told his followers that they knew exactly which songs he was referring to, and indicated that he would not name them.

“Notice I said, ‘Y’all don’t be liking THESE songs… Y’all know what f_ckin songs I’m talking about. If I was talking about any other era, I would’ve said ‘THOSE songs.’ We on the same page, but y’all ain’t reading between. Feel me?”

On Tuesday Billboard-charting Dancehall producer Ainsley ‘NotNice’ Morris, who produced many of Vybz Kartel’s songs including Last Man Standing, Mama, Cake Soap Rampin Shop with Spice, and his Pan Di Gaza album, reposted T-Pain’s statements and echoed and endorsed the rapper’s sentiments.

“Some a dem artist ya gwaan like dem a the shit, Big up all the producers weh turn shit inna manure!” the outspoken Kyng Mydas producer said.

A barrage of responses followed, many in agreement, some on the fence and a few objecting, to the producer who is the man behind a responsible for Jah Vinci’s break out hit Watch Yuh Friends, and Popcaan‘s Gangster City and Dream.

“‘DJ ears cock up when him hear bad riddim’ shabba ranks did say,” mck_ten wrote in agreement, while from_the_hollows declared: “True that thing the beat a 95% a the music next 5 a the lyrics not even the artist”.

On the fence was currentzicksofficial, who argued that both artists and producers were equally important in making hits, as while vocals and lyrics are incredibly important, so too were the music and beats backing the vocals as these are what make people want to get up and dance.

“50/50 .. u can have a good beat and not a good artiste fi hit it the right way , so the artiste counts too .. not saying producers aint shit but A mature artiste seals everything! Example… vybz kartel . dat man make all the simplest beat seem more creative due to how him structure,” he said.

Toast producer Izy also posted a meme, along the lines of T-Pain’s arguments, with visuals depicting a star sitting beside a producer seemingly at a press conference with all the media microphones pointed at him.  The producer is totally ignored by the media, while the sound engineer is out of sight and supposedly out of mind.

Izy’s caption was: “Cap or no-cap?”

“Sounds about right,” was the response from supadups, while anthony_viviano announced: “That’s exactly it. I’m pretty sure we more important and the world does not know that. Total bullshit we make them sound AMAZING. And you out there league IZY keep up the great work”.

However for producer Creep Chromatic, getting fame was neither here nor there, as he was interested in only one thing.

“Care zero as long as money a run 😀” he wrote to which Izy responded:  “@creepchromatic st8 long as we all a win”.

Pine and Ginger producer and songwriter Tesselated also concurred with Izy, and pointed out that the audio engineers who work behind the scenes to make artists dreams a reality, were not only ignored, but in most cases obscured.

“Lmaooooo facts… and later @tessvibe the fact that the average person don’t even know what an engineer do” backed up by tima_dee who added: “And the writer is nonexistent hahahahhaha.”

Others argued that at the end of the day, the producers were the ones who were making most of the money from the songs, so everyone was getting their just reward.

“But who make more money In the bank £€$?” dricko_sbl said, while
buddypippen305 stated: “True but roles reverse with where the check and residuals reside in most cases though 😁”.
