Skillibeng

The last year has been an eventful one for break-out dancehall artist Skillibeng.

Not only is he dominating the charts and YouTube trending lists, but he is also playing the game differently from those who played it before him. One of the differences is Skilli’s willingness to collaborate with other artists, whether their star is established or upcoming.

Here are ten top collaborations the prodigy has done so far.

10. Sound Like – Jakal ft. Skillibeng

A fusion of the hardcore rap sound of the promising Jakal and Skilli’s dancehall flair created a banger of a track. “The hook says all there is to say, it does sound like supm to get some money to,” wrote Eva Blessed Baby in the YouTube comment section. This collaboration reminded us just how well the cousins Dancehall and Hip Hop mesh together. This song wasn’t just an artist collaboration it was also a collaboration on production, Produced by 3R40 records, Y Rush & Claims Records. Sound Like helped the “Brick Pon Brick” deejay to close out 2020 on a high while propelling Jamaican-born rapper Jakal into the spotlight.

Lyric Check:

“Sounds like supm you get some money to
Sounds like supm you fuk a honey to

9. High Times – Dre Island x Skillibeng

Dre Island’s raspy vocals introduce us to a new level of Trap Dancehall style, a style the E-syde don thrives in which saw both artists produce a genre-bending moment. Premiering on International Marijuana Day of this year (420/2021), this song was meant to be a smoker’s anthem and stayed true to that intention. This song gives the weird feeling of listening to Reggae (Dre Island), Dancehall (Skillibeng) and Trap Music (Instrumental) at the same time.

“All I need now is some papers
And some good kush to get me through this day
When I smoke, I go up like elevator
So high, me mind on me money (Day and night, yeah)
All I need now is some papers
And some good kush to get me through this day
When I smoke, I go up like elevator
So high, no see them haters ’cause I’m lifted through the day”

The YouTube description for this video read “More “HighTimes” for your meditation #420”, which it duly provided.

8. Bin Laden – Skillibeng x Tommy Lee

Tommy lee’s crazy delivery on this track settles into Skilli’s signature flow seamlessly. Bin Laden exploded on the scene with the release of “The Prodigy Mixtape’ and has since become a regular on the turntables. Hardcore lyrics with new-age flows saw Tommy Lee and Skillibeng create a classic Bad Man song.

7. Thy Will (Remix) – Lila Ikè, Skillibeng

Lila Ikè and Skillibeng confronted social chaos a remix of Thy Will, which originally appeared on Ikè’s The ExPerience EP.  The remix is a hard-hitting testament to crushing social ills, a “very crucial song in these times”, according to Ikè. The pair’s passionate words are brought to life in the music video featuring protest-inspired scenes that were shot in Kingston, Jamaica.

6. Have It – Popcaan x Skillibeng x Quada

Popcaan recruited Skillibeng and Quada for the FIXTAPE track Have It.  The visuals takes us to St. Elizabeth, along with other locales in rural Jamaica where the Unruly Boss limes with his crew and friends, including Harlem rapper Dave East, Reggae singer Dre Island and of course his cronies, Skillibeng and Quada. The Firm & Strong deejay tunes the hook, “ Never touch di road a me nuh have it,” in somewhat of a reminder to his nemesis that he’s always packing. Skillibeng follows up in the second phase of the track to reiterate Popcaan’s dispatch with his usual traphall style and flow. Quada flexes his lyrical prowess to establish himself and his compatriots as badder than the rest.

5. Everest – Sean Paul x Masicka x Skillibeng

Everest is a song with a star-studded lineup that was featured on Sean Paul’s album Live N Livin. Masicka by himself is always a lyrical juggernaut however when Skilli arrived on the second verse, the already vibrant track hit new heights. Sean Paul was tasked with the chorus in this banger and the veteran Superstar lives up to the hype while the young bucks raged. This track is a Dutty Rock production which of course is Sean Pauls Label.

4. Honda – Twani x Skillibeng

Honda won the ears of the public in the summer of 2020 and spent the year as one of the hottest songs around. Twani’s catchy melody made it addictive and Skillibeng again delivered. Another gyallis anthem added to the Eastsyde Don’s catalogue and the rest was history.

Trap dancehall features with trap stars, who would have thought? It seems Skillibeng and Eastsyde did and this might be the collab that takes Skillibeng to the ears of the U.S mainstream. This track proves that the modern style of dancehall has the potential to take it to the highest level. Released just over a week ago this song has already crept unto list by share star power alone. If Skillibeng could successfully dip into their fan bases it would be a great look for him and for dancehall. Shout out to Eastsyde Records for looking towards the larger markets in music industry, well done!

2. Not – Skillibeng (ft. Street Genna, Qenga, F.S, One Sparks)

It is not often that a dancehall song slinging gun lyrics makes it to 12 million views on YouTube. This speaks to the impact of this Eastsyde Records collaboration. It was released with a unique music video almost resembling a cypher with the artists taking turns to rock the microphone. It can easily be argued that this is 2021’s most popular song so far, and it can be heard bursting through a car window near you. Skilli seems determined to bring some other artist’s to the forefront defeating prior stereotypes about dancehall artists. Another hardore banger with potent gun lyrics offered up by all involved, a real street anthem!

1. Young Boss Remix – Blvk H3ro x Wayne J x Skillibeng

Three Young Bosses graced one track and produced some magic. The Young veteran Wayne J, Blvk H3ro the melody/flow box and Skillibeng the lyrical fortress gave us a track that everyone can listen to. A radio-friendly song without being typical, a hit with a difference. This collaboration was part of Wayne J’s and Blvk H3ro’s New Millennium EP which brought them onto the radar of many dancehall fans for the first time, and it is safe to say they were impressed. The New-Age sounds they brought along with them blended nicely with Skilli’s signature sound, forging a classic.

Lyric Check :

“The young boss deh in here now
Gimmie way mek mi bun up every stageshow
