Afro-dancehall star King Perryy says his latest body of work has cemented his place on Nigeria’s growing music scene. Previously a seminary student who had ambitions of becoming a Catholic priest, King Perryy is beginning to distinguish himself as a staple on the dancehall music scene in Africa, most recently dropping his LP entitled Citizen of the World.

Citizen of the World delivers a wide range of moods, emotions and genres, opening with the Teflon Zincfence-produced African Boy, a motivational, bass-heavy reggae manifesto.

As the 14 track body of work progresses, King Perryy also ventures into drill Dancehall with his pre-emptive post-pandemic anthem “YKTFV”.

Other standouts include the Guilty Beatz-produced afrobeats bop Yawa, and The Funicator, an afro-bashment anthem for ladies on the hustle.

According to King Perryy, it is in finding himself that he came up with the title for the LP noting that Citizen of the World represents his current feelings about his identity and frame of mind.

“It’s not just an album. I found the title the moment I found myself,” he said.

Citizen of the World, released via Timaya’s DM Records, is an introduction into what King Perry has dubbed as his expansive ‘continental sound,’ a fusion of afrobeats, pan-African pop, reggae and dancehall.

“The Continental Sound is a fusion of different genres, lifestyles and cultures,” King Perryy said.

“I’m not just ‘of’ one place, or Nigeria. I’m ‘of the world,” added Perryy.

The LP features the previously released singles Work ‘N’ Grind, My Darlina, Waist (feat. Kizz Daniel) and YKTFV (feat. PsychoYP), along with 11 new tracks including Perry’s latest single, Yawa.

King Perryy is one of Nigeria’s most ambitious young artists, who has been steadily gaining traction on the continent since dropping his breakthrough single Man on Duty (feat. Timaya) in 2018.

Subsequent releases Murder feat. Teni and Work N Grind have further solidified his rep as an artist to watch on Lagos’ exploding music scene.
