A Guyanese “uncle” and American actress and singer Jennifer Lopez were at the center of a hilarious video making the rounds recently after the man had no idea who J-lo was. The moment, originally part of an American Idol feature in 2015, went viral on Twitter when it resurfaced last week.

The multi-platinum singer and actress was being filmed as she took a walk down memory lane, back to her childhood block in the Bronx. In the video, Lopez can be seen walking and pointing out the home she grew up in, which is now occupied by the Guyanese man.

Seeing the man, Lopez says “hi” and proceeds to inform him that she used to live there. And as a true Caribbean elder, the Guyanese uncle replied, “You’s who?”

Lopez told him her first name to start and that was not enough so she shared her last name but the uncle was not impressed, and still confused about what the fuss [the camera crew] was about. Leave it to a Caribbean elder to humble a world-famous singer.

Guyanese nationals shared the video and their thoughts on twitter.

Botlolo grootboom reassured everyone that this was typical of Guyanese people: “typical Guyanese mood,” while others credited his reaction to Mariah Carey’s infamous “I don’t know her” phrase.

In an interview with a German TV host in the early 2000s, Carey was asked about then Grammy-nominated Lopez and Carey replied “I don’t know her”. In the video, Carey was also asked about Beyonce to which she promptly replied “I love Beyonce, Beyonce is fabulous…”

Mariah Carey fans have dubbed the Lopez snub as one of the internet’s greatest memeable moments.

Carey fan, John Ivans wrote “Mariah Carey unknowingly birthed the internet’s greatest meme before memes were even a thing. “

Ten years after the original interview Carey is adamant that she still doesn’t know Jennifer Lopez. However, in her interview with Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live, she did acknowledge that she knew of Lopez and had met her on several occasions but did not know her well enough to say she knew her.

The decade-old snub has come full circle as the Guyanese credited Mariah for the uncle’s ignorance of pop culture, with some calling it ‘the Mariah impact’.

Despite the slight, Lopez has made a noteworthy name for herself. Since the release of her blockbuster 1999 album On the 6, J.Lo has racked up ten Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. And her second studio album J-Lo is a four-time platinum album with hits like Love Don’t Cost A Thing and I’m Real.
