The original King of the Dancehall, Yellowman has had his song Mr. Chin placed in the movie Boogie, a basketball drama and coming-of-age tale about Queens prodigy Alfred “Boogie” Chin.

The late US-rapper Pop Smoke also made his posthumous acting debut in the film, and is also featured on the soundtrack.

Written and directed by Eddie Huang and distributed by Focus Features, Boogie is a film about “Boogie” Chin, an Asian basketball phenom living in Queens, N.Y., who dreams of one day playing in the NBA. While his parents pressure him to focus on earning a scholarship to an elite college, Boogie must find a way to navigate a new girlfriend, high school, the burden of expectation and on-court rival “Monk” (played by Pop Smoke).

Mr. Chin appeared on Yellowman‘s 1982 albums, Mister Yellowman (Greensleeves Records) and then Duppy or Gunman (VP Records). In 2018, Pitchfork ranked Mister Yellowman at No. 170 in their 200 best albums of the entire 1980s.

In the Henry “Junjo” Lawes production recorded with the Roots Radics Band at Channel One, Yellowman is disgruntled over an Asian shopkeeper’s limited inventory, singing “Wha’ happen to the Red Stripe beer and Lion Stout?…Mr. Chin, boy you fi sell the right thing”.  He goes on to boast about his conquest of Chinese girlfriends.

Yellowman’s biggest hits I’m Getting Married in the Morning, which previously appeared on the HBO sitcom Entourage, and Zungguzungguguzungguzengwhich previously appeared on the FOX sitcom New Girl and the AMC drama Breaking Bad and the movie Yardie, have brought the now 65-year-old worldwide acclaim.

Another hit, Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt, appeared in the movie Something Wild and on the Grand Theft Auto V soundtrack in 2013.  Soldier Tek Over appeared in the movie Club Paradise, while Girl Watcher was used The Mighty Quinn.

The iconic deejay and toaster was twice nominated for the Best Reggae Album Grammy Award in his over 40-year career. Yellowman’s rise from poverty to becoming Jamaica’s first Dancehall superstar prompted the Jamaican government to award him the Order of Distinction.

Boogie: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack also features AP by Popsmoke, Big Drip by Fivio Foreign, Fear Over Love by Sheff G, and more.
