Capleton, born Clifton George Bailey III in Islington, St. Mary, Jamaica, is one of reggae and dancehall’s most influential voices. He emerged in the late 1980s with hard-hitting early dancehall records before evolving into a leading figure in the conscious reggae revival of the 1990s. His music is closely associated with Rastafari teachings, social commentary, African pride, and spiritual upliftment, delivered in a distinctive gravelly, high-energy style that made him a standout performer on stage and on record. Songs such as “Prophet,” “Tour,” “Jah Jah City,” “More Fire,” and “That Day Will Come” helped define his reputation as both a dancehall star and a roots reggae messenger. Capleton’s career also includes major albums such as Prophecy, I-Testament, More Fire, and Still Blazin’, the latter earning a Grammy nomination. Often called The Fireman or The Prophet, he remains a major cultural force in Jamaican music and a respected elder of the genre.
