Sizzla, born Miguel Orlando Collins in St. Mary, Jamaica, is one of the most influential voices in modern reggae and dancehall. Raised in August Town, he emerged in the mid-1990s as a leading figure in the conscious reggae-dancehall movement, helped early in his career by producer Philip “Fatis” Burrell. His first recordings appeared in 1995, and his breakthrough came with the albums “Praise Ye Jah” and especially “Black Woman and Child,” which established him as a major cultural artist known for spiritually driven lyrics, fast deejay delivery, and melodic singing. Associated with the Bobo Ashanti branch of Rastafari, Sizzla has built an exceptionally prolific catalog that spans dozens of albums and combines roots reggae, dancehall, and social commentary. His work often addresses Rastafari, African consciousness, injustice, repatriation, and upliftment in the ghetto. Alongside his recording career, he has also been linked to community efforts in August Town through Judgement Yard. His influence has remained global, and his name is regularly cited among the key architects of modern roots-influenced dancehall.
