It started like any celebrity get out the vote message. Nicki Minaj sat down with Lara Trump on Fox News, talked up local elections and told young people to do their homework. Then, laughing, she added a few words that sent the clip flying across social media: “And, vote red, nah.”
The appearance aired on My View with Lara Trump, the show hosted by Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law. Before the punchline, Minaj’s pitch sounded like something any civics teacher could sign off on.
You know how much you want a say in what happens, and realize that the only way to have that is by voting,” she said. “Not just voting for the president, but just voting in, you know, all the local elections.”
She pushed viewers to research the candidates on their local ballots before showing up at the booth. “You guys are so blessed to be able to vote,” she said, urging them to take advantage of that ability.
Lara Trump was clearly delighted by the closer. “Amen. I feel like we can end it there,” she responded, before adding that she did have one more question. “Great sales pitch to the voters of America, Nicki, I love it.”
Minaj also used the sit-down to praise the president directly. She called Trump a “very authentic person” and claimed that “everyone loves him,” a line that did not exactly survive contact with the internet.
Online reaction split along predictable lines. Trump supporters and a chunk of her most devoted Barbz cheered the moment, treating it as a star refusing to follow the usual Hollywood script. Critics ripped into her for backing a party whose policies, they argue, have hit immigrants and working Americans hard.
One detail kept popping up in the replies. Plenty of users pointed out that Minaj, who was born in Trinidad and Tobago before growing up in Queens, can’t legally vote in U.S. elections herself, which made the “you guys are so blessed” framing land awkwardly for a lot of viewers. Not everyone stuck to politics either, with some commenters taking aim at her wig instead.
For longtime fans, this is a strange chapter to watch unfold. Minaj came up in the Young Money camp alongside Lil Wayne and Drake, turned “Super Bass” and “Anaconda” into massive hits, and spent years as one of the loudest voices in rap. That history makes her open embrace of MAGA politics a lot harder for part of her audience to process.
There’s also the question of who she’s actually reaching. A Fox News weekend slot isn’t where most of her younger listeners spend their time, but the clip has clearly traveled well beyond that audience.
With the video still circulating and the replies still piling up, the Barbz are sorting out how much of this they’re willing to ride with. Election season is only getting louder, and Minaj seems happy to keep talking.
