“So I’m not sure it’s a leak.” That was Roger Goodell’s answer when reporters asked the NFL commissioner about a Puck report claiming Jay-Z will headline the Super Bowl halftime show.
He made the remark at an October 21 news conference in New York, held after league owners wrapped up their meetings.
According to Front Office Sports, Goodell said he hadn’t heard about any leak because he’d been sitting in committee meetings. “We haven’t announced anything. Until we do, we won’t make any comment on that,” he added.
So where does that leave fans? Goodell didn’t shut the idea down, but he didn’t turn the Puck story into an official booking either. For now, it’s a report and nothing more.
The interesting wrinkle here is that Jay-Z sits on both sides of the stage. His company, Roc Nation, organizes the halftime show through its partnership with the league, which means he has helped shape the event for years. Booking himself would be a very different look.

He’s clearly thought about it. At the January 2024 red carpet premiere of “The Book of Clarence,” Jay-Z told Entertainment Tonight that choosing himself too early would have been selfish. Then he left the door cracked open with three words: “Maybe one year.”
The Roc Nation setup involves a lot more people than the guy whose name is now floating around. In 2024, Seth Dudowsky served as the NFL’s head of music and its point person for musical events, also acting as the league’s liaison with Roc Nation.
He told the Associated Press the aim was to let artists express themselves while keeping the show tied to the host city’s culture and to what was happening more broadly.
That approach has earned praise from people who’ve actually stood on that stage. Snoop Dogg, who performed in 2022, credited both men for opening the halftime show up to hip hop. “Shout out to Jay-Z for changing the climate. Roger Goodell for giving him an opportunity,” he told AP.

Not every account paints the Jay-Z talk as a victory lap, though. Back in September, an unnamed source told the Daily Mail that Jay-Z could perform with guests if organizers couldn’t lock down a single superstar, as AllHipHop reported.
That version framed him as a fallback plan, not a first choice, and definitely not a confirmed act.
The date and venue are already set. Super Bowl LXI lands on February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, the same building where Snoop and his West Coast lineup took the stage in 2022.
That leaves plenty of runway for the speculation to keep building. Until the league puts out an official announcement, Goodell has made it plain he isn’t saying another word.
