Lil Wayne Says He and Drake Have a Vault of Unreleased Music Dating Back to 2014

DancehallMag is the leading independent publication covering Dancehall and Reggae music, the artists, and culture since 2019.

Lil Wayne apparently spends his downtime digging through old Drake sessions, re-editing them, and texting the new versions straight to Drizzy’s phone.

That’s the picture Weezy painted in a recent conversation, confirming that the two are sitting on a pile of music nobody outside their circle has heard.

And this isn’t a couple of loose verses. Wayne says the stash goes back to 2014 and 2015, and he keeps returning to it.

“We have a whole bunch of unreleased material,” Wayne said. “I go through stuff from 2014 and 2015, like… really unheard stuff. I edit stuff up and just send it to his phone so he can hear the new versions of it and get him going.

According to Tunechi, Drake lights up every time one of those updated tracks lands. His first question is usually about timing, asking Wayne when he plans to actually put it out.

That’s where the two sides of this story split. Drake sounds ready, but Wayne has never been in a rush when it comes to release dates, and fans know it better than anyone.

Tha Carter V was announced years before it finally arrived in 2018, held up in large part by his legal fight with Birdman and Cash Money.

The years Wayne mentioned are telling, too. In 2014 and 2015, Wayne was deep in that label standoff, putting out projects like Sorry 4 the Wait 2 and Free Weezy Album while his main album sat frozen. Drake, meanwhile, was riding a hot streak that included If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late in early 2015.

So the idea that the two were quietly recording together during that stretch adds a new layer to a period when Wayne’s official output was tangled up in contracts.

It also raises an obvious question about what kind of songs were made when both artists were in very different places.

The history between them runs long. Wayne brought Drake into Young Money in 2009, and the mentor and protégé dynamic turned into one of rap’s most dependable partnerships.

Their run of collaborations speaks for itself. “I’m Goin In” came off So Far Gone, “Right Above It” helped launch I Am Not a Human Being in 2010, and “HYFR” became a standout on Take Care. There’s also “Miss Me,” “She Will,” and “Love Me,” the last of which pulled in Future as well.

Fans hoping for a full joint project shouldn’t hold their breath just yet. Wayne didn’t mention a release plan, a title, or any kind of timeline, only that the music exists and that he keeps tinkering with it.

For now, the only person getting regular previews is Drake himself. Somewhere on his phone sits a growing folder of decade-old songs with fresh edits, and Wayne seems perfectly happy to keep adding to it.
