Nobody had a country rap crossover with an Atlanta melody king on their VMAs bingo card, but that is exactly what viewers got tonight. Gunna and Shaboozey took the stage together, and the question now is simple: did it work?
On paper, the pairing looks strange. Shaboozey built his breakout on twang, line dancing and bar singalongs, while Gunna made his name on silky flows and trap production coming out of Atlanta.
Look a little closer, though, and the overlap makes more sense. Shaboozey has always had one foot in hip hop, and he has talked openly about growing up on rap before drifting toward country storytelling.
His rise over the past year has been hard to ignore. “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” spent 19 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, matching the record set by Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” another song that blurred the line between rap and country.
Before that run, a lot of listeners first heard him on Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter, where he appeared on “Spaghettii” and “Sweet Honey Buckiin’.”
His album Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going followed, and it turned the Virginia native into one of the most talked about names in country, even among people who swear they do not listen to country.
Gunna’s path to this stage has been messier. He walked out of jail in December 2022 after entering an Alford plea in the YSL RICO case, and that plea sparked a wave of backlash from fans who saw it as a betrayal of Young Thug and the YSL crew.
The music kept him afloat anyway. “fukumean” became one of the biggest rap songs of 2023, and his album One of Wun kept him on the charts in 2024, which suggests the audience that doubted him never fully left.
That history is part of why tonight’s performance lands differently depending on who is watching. For some fans, seeing Gunna on a major awards show stage next to a chart topping country star is proof his comeback is complete. Others still have not moved past the plea, and a VMAs slot will not change their minds.
On the Shaboozey side, the reaction splits along different lines. Country traditionalists have already grumbled about how much hip hop he brings into the genre, while rap fans might wonder what he is doing on a stage with one of trap’s slickest voices.
There is also a business logic here that is easy to miss. MTV loves a moment that gets two separate fanbases talking at once, and a Gunna and Shaboozey team up does exactly that, pulling country listeners and rap heads into the same conversation.
Fans are still weighing in online, and early opinions seem to swing between people calling it the most unexpected pairing of the night and people who just want to know if a studio version is coming.
Neither artist has said anything yet about plans to release music together, so for now, the performance is all anyone has to go on.
