The detail that stops you cold is the timing. Lil Nas X just celebrated his “10,000th day alive,” posting a video saying “I made it,” and days later he was on Instagram mourning the death of his mother, Tameka Hill.
The 27-year-old rapper, born Montero Hill, shared the news on Saturday, August 29, posting throwback photos alongside the words “RIP TO THE BADDEST EVER! LOVE U FOREVER MOMMY.” He closed with five words that said everything: “This one’s gonna hurt.”
Hill’s age and cause of death had not been confirmed at the time of reporting. Billboard reached out to Nas’ representatives but had not received a response.
The loss lands in the middle of what has already been an extraordinarily turbulent stretch for the “Old Town Road” artist. Earlier this year he revealed he had been in rehab “for a few months,” and had also been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
He later described spending time with family in Atlanta and friends in Los Angeles to, in his own words, “ground myself down to Earth and get out of my head.”
Nas has also been open about finding more structured support, saying he now has both a therapist and a psychiatrist, which he called “really helpful.”
That kind of candor about mental health from someone with his platform does not go unnoticed, especially among younger fans who have followed his career since he went from posting memes to winning Grammys.
The relationship between Nas and his mother was never simple. Back in 2020, he spoke to Variety about it with a quiet honesty that clearly cost him something. “I never really talk about my mom,” he said. “She’s an addict, so we don’t have the closest relationship. Even trying to get her better, things didn’t quite work out. But there’s still love.”
That last line, “but there’s still love,” is the part that hits hardest now. Grief after a complicated relationship is its own specific kind of weight, and fans across social media have been responding to that reality, not just offering condolences but acknowledging how much harder it can be to lose someone when the relationship was unresolved or painful.
The news also comes against the backdrop of legal trouble that has followed Nas since August 2025, when he was charged with four felonies after allegedly attacking police officers while walking naked through the streets of Los Angeles.
According to Variety, those charges will be dismissed if he continues with mental health treatment, which he appears to be doing.
The “10,000th day alive” video now reads completely differently in hindsight. He was marking survival, sobriety, and something that felt like a turning point. What came next was not what anyone expected, least of all him.
Fans and fellow artists have been flooding his comments with support, but Nas has not posted further since the tribute. The story is very much still moving.
