Teejay Reacts To Foreign Affairs Minister Kamina Johnson Smith’s ‘Drift’ Dance Moves

Dancehall artist Teejay, Minister of Foreign Affairs Kamina Johnson Smith

A video of Minister of Foreign Affairs Kamina Johnson Smith expertly dancing up a storm to Teejay’s Drift has left tongues wagging on social media, including that of the Up Top Boss.

Many persons who saw the video expressed surprise, even shock, that the Minister, who is an Attorney-at-Law by profession, was executing Gabbidon’s Drift dance with precision.

After seeing the video Teejay himself predicted that the 2023 “summer song” would be hot even into the middle of next year.

“This song going straight to next summa 🔥🔥🔥,” he wrote about the song, whose remix video featuring Afrobeats star Davido, was released three days ago.

Over on Twitter, there were a few persons who showcased the Minister’s dancing display.

“The Hon. Kamina Johnson-Smith, showing that she’s more than just the nation’s top diplomat, and that she is also up-to-date with Jamaica’s pop-culture…,” one Twitter user wrote.

Some commenters who saw the video of the Minister brushed it aside and sought to diminish her moves as that of yet another pretentious Uptowner.

“Gimmicks, dem only use dancehall when it suits dem,” one woman wrote while one man added: “Dem need fi go do something productive in regards to the country nth to be proud of… all granny a do that”.

“She surprise me to how she boring inna parliament! Come thruuuuu ravazzzz minister 💃,” one woman wrote.

Unknown to many, the usually reserved Johnson Smith lists dancing as one of her favorite past times and is also described as “an avid dancer” by her alma mater Campion College.

As for the song Drift, in discussing its origins in mid-November, Teejay had disclosed that while the dancer Gabbidon had reached out to him almost a year ago to come up with a song to complement the Drift dance, it had taken him a while to get a fitting beat.

In an interview with British disc jockey DJ Davda on Kiss Fresh, Teejay in explaining that the dance was created before the Afro-Dancehall track, had affirmed that the dance was the inspiration to write the hit song which played a role in the Montego Bay native earning a record deal with Warner Records.

Drift had ebbed its way onto the US Billboard Rhythmic Airplay and R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay charts, where it’s debuted at No. 33 and No. 41, respectively.

Produced by DJ Mac, PXNDX (Panda) and Top Braff Music, the track has just under seven million plays on Spotify, while collectively the official video and visualizer have racked up close to 15 million views on YouTube.

Gabbidon, who traveled with Teejay to Nigeria for the filming of the accompanying music video for the remix of Drift, with Davido, had, in a June interview with The Fix, revealed that he had approached several deejays to create a “dancing song” to complement the Drift dance, but to no avail, that is, until Teejay acceded.

According to Gabbidon, whilst he was on a trip to Canada, Teejay had called him and broke the news that he had found the perfect beat for the dance move.

Drift, Gabbidon had explained, was initially a simple foot movement akin to Elephant Man’s Log On, after which he “kind of built something around it.”

Admitting that Drift was his most successful song to date, Gabbidon had also told the interviewers that he came up with the idea to create the dance after recognising that the excitement behind his other big dance move, Foot, was ‘fading out’.  Subsequent to the success of Drift, Gabbidon said some of the very artists who had shunned his idea, had returned to contact him for collabs.
