Dancehall artist Popcaan has earned this first Gold certification in the UK for I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times), a song by English music producer Jamie xx that also featured American rapper Young Thug.

According to the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), the song was issued the Brit Certified Gold Award on Friday (December 2), after it sold over 400,000 units in the UK, as measured by The Official Charts Company.

Released in 2015, I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times) is the third single from Jamie xx’s debut studio album, In Colour.

The song previously received Gold certification in the United States in March 2021, after it sold over 500,000 units in the country.  It was also certified Platinum in Canada after it surpassed 80,000 units sold in the country in September 2022.

It has amassed over 150 million plays on Spotify, while the official music video, which captured both Thug and Popcaan in their home turfs, has amassed over 21 million views on YouTube.

I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times) grew in popularity over the years and was given a major boost when it appeared on the soundtrack for the video game NBA Live 16 and NBA 2K17 and for Kobe Bryant’s MyCareer spot.

According to Popcaan, he had actually recorded a full song before Young Thug was brought onto the project.  “I was the first person to record on that track still, I actually recorded a full song,” he told a Trinidadian radio station in 2015.  “They reach out to other people and after a time I heard that it was Young Thug.”

Thug and fellow Atlanta rapper Gunna are currently behind bars after they were accused of committing gang-related crimes in an 80-page Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act indictment targeting members of the Young Slime Life (YSL) gang.

Authorities accuse Thug of being the founder and ring leader of YSL.

Popcaan currently has Silver UK certifications for Kisses for Breakfast with Melissa Steel, Come Over with Jorja Smith, Should’ve Been Me with Naughty Boy and Kayla, and I’m In Control with Alunageorge, all of which have sold over 200,000 units in the country.

His latest collaboration with a female singer is Next To Me with Toni-Ann Singh.  The song, which has picked over 1.6 million views on YouTube three days after its release, will be part of his upcoming album, Great Is He.
