Jamaican star Shenseea has earned her first nomination for a MTV Video Music Award (VMA) after she was featured as the platform’s “Global PUSH Artist” for the month of March 2022.

Shenseea is nominated for “Push performance of the year” for her performance of R U That.   The single featured rapper 21 Savage and appeared on her debut album, Alpha.

In her Instagram Stories yesterday, Shenseea called the nomination a first for herself and Jamaica.  However, she isn’t the first female Jamaican artist to be nominated for a VMA.

In 2003, Lady Saw was nominated for Best Pop Video following her collab with No Doubt titled Underneath It All.

Several male Jamaican stars have also been nominated including Bounty Killer, who won Best Pop Video and Best Group Video in 2002 with No Doubt for Hey Baby; Elephant Man, who was nominated for Pon Di River in 2004; Sean Paul, who was nominated for Best New Artist In A Video and Best Dance Video for Get Busy in 2003, and Best Dance Video for Temperature in 2006; and OMI, who was nominated for Song Of The Summer for Cheerleader in 2015.

“I still try to infuse a bit of my patois in my music, and it’s what makes me unique, and it’s what makes my sound,” she added.

The singer is reportedly working on a follow-up to her debut album.
