Mystery Lady, a 2020 collab with Jamaican-American singer Masego and rapper Don Toliver, is now certified Gold in the United States.

The song, which appeared on Masego’s Studying Abroad: Extended Stay, was certified Gold on Tuesday (May 3) by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) after it reached the sales and streaming equivalent of 500,000 units sold in the US.

Produced by Kojo, Sam Gellaitry and WondaGurl, the song has racked up over 23 million views on YouTube.

In July 2021, Mystery Lady was featured as the soundtrack for an Apple Music ad campaign showcasing the streaming service’s new spatial audio technology.

“Masego’s collab is perhaps the most coveted type of Apple commercial for musicians, one that features both an active single from an artist’s catalog and showcases their unique skills and personality (the singer even reprises the same pink suit he wears in his “Mystery Lady” single art),” Variety Magazine noted.

The Studying Abroad: Extended Stay album had also featured Shenseea on the track Silver Tongue Devil.  It was nominated for Best Progressive R&B Album at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards.

This is Masego’s second song to be certified by the RIAA.

Tadow, his 2017 collab with French instrumentalist FKJ which appeared on his debut album Lady Lady, is currently certified platinum in the US.

Masego, whose real name is Micah Davis, hails from Waterhouse, St. Andrew, and had migrated to New York at the age of four.  In an interview with the Jamaica Observer, Masego described his sound as traphouse jazz which reflects his passion for travel and new experiences.

“It is that mix of jazz, R&B, and hip hop. It all started when I was in college in Virginia. I was among a set of musicians who also specialised in various genres on music. When we did gigs we would bring different parts and I realised it was different and worked with that. I also love to travel so that influences my musical style. Some of the songs on Studying Abroad reflect this. Tracks like Passport, Bliss Abroad and Well Travelled are examples,” he said.
