Dancehall artist Naje’s latest single is ‘2 Piece’, a cheeky send-up praising the assets of sexy two-piece bikini-wearing women.

However, a controversial line which seems to praise ‘light-skinned women’ has provoked the ire of some commentators who object to the reference in a song released in Black History Month in a country that routinely struggles with social issues such as bleaching and colorism.

“The feedback has been great to the video but a few people have said the line, ‘yu body chrome’ sounds like it’s for the brown-skinned girls but if you realize, I use one brown-skinned and one black-skinned girl so the ting balance,” Najee, whose real name is Najee Melvin Bailey, said.

The single was released on the Enyaw Entertainment label on February 4.

Najee said he regards making music as an almost spiritual enterprise that changed the direction of his life.

“For me, music became my lifeline that made an entrapped soul feel free. It forced me to take myself seriously into a life I’ve always wanted where I can still make people happy and excited through hard times. My inspiration comes from everyday living but also knowing that me and anybody I work with can raise the bar and set that trend that will encourage others,” he said.

He grew up in the Stony Hill area of St. Andrew where he attended Ewarton High before completing his secondary education at Maths Unlimited. He voiced his first song when he was 12 years old but only began to hone his skills to a higher level last year when he recorded ‘Shake It’ for Cornelius Records, his first officially released song.

“I was a lover of music from a tender age, my friends just influenced me more to pursue it as an artiste for me to cope through my personal struggles and turn myself into a go-getter. This makes others like me know anything is possible,” he said.

He is known for the singles, Shake It, Tongue and Sagle featuring DJ Chiqui Dubs.
