Dexta Daps, whose real name is Louis Grandison, was born and raised in the West Kingston neighborhood of Seaview Gardens, Jamaica. He grew up in the shadows of industry pioneers like Shabba Ranks and Bounty Killer, who both hail from the area and ultimately influenced his career path in music.

“The great Shabba Ranks, Bounty Killer. I look up to those because those are first-hand testimonies right there in front of me. Shabba Ranks is that person that did it as a big elder. And you can see it with your eyes, he comes back to Seaview Gardens to hold a vibe and you’re like ‘Wow, this is a superstar,’” Daps told music journalist Reshma B in a past interview.

The Call Me If singer also shared a deep adoration and respect for Shabba’s mother, Constance Christie aka ‘Mama Christie’ who passed earlier in February. He honored her in his 2016 hit song Shabba Madda Pot and told Reshma B in the same interview that Miss Christie was like a mother to all the kids in the neighborhood.

“It’s all energy in that song. We made that song so we can dance, we can enjoy. But it also has meaning for my area, Seaview Gardens. It’s like my area’s history in that song. And when I say “Shabba Madda Pot” I’m not talking about Shabba there, I’m talking about his mum. His mum used to cook a lot of food for the community.”

The fans were all for the show of appreciation to Mama P.

“How yuh mean G if anuh Mamma there wouldn’t be a #dextadaps respect congratulations mom,” said one of his IG followers.

Others chimed in, “Awesome baby 👏👏👏👏 u did a great job making mammy happy 🙌🙌🙌🏻🙌🏻,” and “Big up Artist, that’s a Boss move🔥🔥🔥.” Another said, “She must’ve been so proud 🔥🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌”.
