Incarcerated Dancehall star Vybz Kartel was among the star-studded list of collaborations on Machel Montano’s The Wedding Album. The album, which comes a year after Montano’s actual wedding, featured an impressive line-up of collaborations with artists from across the globe.

Montano released the album on March 19 and highlighted that the project was dedicated to his wife Renee on the heels of them celebrating their first wedding anniversary.

In an official statement on the project, Montano said, “Firstly the album is a dedication to my wife and the wonderful partnership we share and which we celebrate physically, spiritually and culturally. These songs translate feelings we experience when we meet and love, when we dance and share space and when we find joy in togetherness.”

For the album, Kartel joins Montano on the song Super Soca which the duo released in December 2019.

The two cultural icons served up a track called Super Soca where they detailed their experience with talented ladies from each other’s countries. Vybz met a girl from Trinidad and Machel met a girl from Jamaica and it was an all-night party after that.

The catchy, 3 minute single, was an intentional “departure from the road march rompers and fete starters” that Machel is known for but still dance-worthy.

Although the Kartel – Montano mash-up caused a stir when Super Soca was first released this was not the first time the two heavy hitters collaborated on a single. In 2009, a decade earlier, Montano and Kartel joined forces on a track called Hold you Tonight.

Since his incarceration, the Clarks boss has managed to do a series of major collaborations from Shenseea’s controversial break-out single Loodi to Stylo G’s Touchdown remix.

Before Machel, Kartel’s most recent soca song was with Bunji Garlin on the Bicycle Ride remix in 2016.

Like Kartel, dancehall artists Konshens and Ding Dong have also ventured into the soca market with crossover soca songs for the ever-growing soca music fanbase in the Caribbean and Jamaica. Last April Konshens released a well-received collaboration with soca princess Nailah Blackman.

Two days ago Kartel took to his Instagram to show appreciation to Montano for including him in The Wedding Album. He expressed, “ It’s a joy and an honour to be on Machel Montano’s wedding album. Livicated to his wife. Big up mi bredda @tjrecords a feem production.”
